First thing on Monday morning a man armed with a gun entered a dorm and classroom at the Virginia Tech campus. To date there have been no other shootings on US college campus resulting in so much bloodshed. This is the worst ever campus shooting in America's history.
The man responsible for the shootings is now dead. It has still not been confirmed how he died. It is possible that police shot him or that he killed himself.
The president of Virginia Tech, Charles Steger had said, "Today the university was struck with a tragedy that we consider of monumental proportions. The university is shocked and indeed horrified."
According to Virginia Tech the shootings began as early as 7:15am and took place on different ends of the university's campus. The Virginia Tech campus is a total of 2,600 acres. The first attacks occurred in a unisex dorm called West Ambler Johnston. It is thought that there were 894 people living in the dorm.
Two hours after the first attack began in the West Ambler Johnston dorm more shootings occurred on the other side of the campus in the university's engineering building, Norris Hall.
The Police Chief of Virginia Tech, W.R. Flinchum has confirmed that there was one student killed at the West Ambler Johnston dorm and that the other fatalities occurred at the engineering building.
The university has now closed off all entrances to the campus and it has also cancelled all classes until at least the end of Tuesday.
Jason Anthony Smith a student at Virginia Tech and resident of the West Ambler Johnston dorm said, "There's just a lot of commotion. It's hard to tell exactly what's going on."
Another resident of the West Ambler Johnston dorm, freshman, Aimee Kanode described her experiences. Aimee said that the shooting took place on the fourth floor one floor above her room. At 8am this morning a dorm resident was knocking on the doors of students telling them not to leave their rooms. She is quoted as saying, "They had us under lockdown. They temporarily lifted the lockdown, the gunman shot again." "We were all locking in our dorms surfing the Internet trying to figure out what's going on."
Another student that spoke to CNN by telephone said, "We are all in lockdown. Most of the students are sitting on the floors away from windows just trying to be as safe as possible."
The killer has been named as William Morva. It is not yet known why he carried out this atrocity.
