Bloodless Surgery Growing in Popularity with Major Hospitals

The Benefits of Surgical Procedures Without Blood

Vincent Summers
There was a time when surgery without blood was common mostly among certain segments of Society, including the religious group known as Jehovah's Witnesses. While public opinion varied on the question of whether individuals should seek such care, often the response was negative. It was especially thought that children might be abused by the adults responsible for their care.

Often finding good medical care in the hands of willing medical professionals might involve a considerable journey and expense for those seeking it. Sometimes the promise of cooperation might be obtained, only to be broken during surgery.

The Times, They are a-Changing

Progressive hospitals are taking a new look at bloodless surgery, and the benefits it can bring. One example of such a hospital is in South Florida. Studies have shown that blood transfusions, often considered life saving, may do more harm than good. Rather, by expanding blood volume and then using special instruments, blood loss can be minimized. But let this CBS News Video speak for itself.

What This Means for You!

This means something for those who refuse blood for religious reasons. However, it also means something for the average person. It means that dangers and side effects from accepting a blood transfusion can be eliminated. It means less inflammation. It means quicker healing. It also means you will have a surgeon who will be more careful during the surgery, since he or she will be alert to reduce blood-loss. Also, your surgeon will be using state-of-the-art instrumentation in performing that surgery.

The Patient in the Video

The patient in the video is one of Jehovah's Witnesses; however, it could have been anyone. It could have been you. Put yourself into that video as you watch it, and see if you aren't glad that Jehovah's Witnesses worked hard with medical professionals to get the kind of rapport that led to technological advantages you can enjoy.

The Newscasters

The newscasters did not go unaffected by the news story they were reporting. They recognized that the Witnesses were pioneers in this surgery, and that the public should be grateful. So if you once felt very negatively about the Witnesses and their stand on blood, why not carefully consider what this video and the newscasters have to say.
