Blow Up the New York Mets

You cannot possibly be a fan of the New York Mets without absolutely hating this team.

When KO-Rod decided it was a good idea to end his season by punching out a 53 year old man, he officially closed the book on more than just the 2010 Mets. Rodriguez successfully ended one of the most painful eras in the history of the franchise. Record-wise, the Mets have historically been much worse than the team's overall record from 2005 to 2010. Never has this franchise been more of a disappointment to its fans than this current group of jokes in the front office and on the field.

The 2006 Mets seemed destined to win the World Series, as no American League team stood a chance against the Amazins in a seven game series. Endy Chavez's historic catch in game seven of the NLCS lifted the spirits of Mets fans around the country like never before. Those same spirits died a death in the ninth inning, when Yadier Molina crushed a game winning home run off Aaron (bleeping) Heilman.

The 2007 and 2008 collapses left Mets fans both stunned and speechless. Fitting for this franchise, the final game ever played at Shea was another heartbreaking defeat that ensured the Mets would not play October baseball. At least in 2009 and 2010, only the most diluted Mets fan believed this team would actually do anything important. Even when the Mets started out hot and my foolish fellow Mets fans jumped on the bandwagon, I assured each one of them this team would be lucky to finish .500.

Being right isn't always a good thing.

It's now time for every Mets fan to face the inevitable. General Manager Omar Minaya, one of the top five (or higher) highest payrolls in Major League Baseball and this current crop of Mets players have won absolutely nothing of meaning. A division title in 2006? Whoopdie freaking doo. Blowing up the Mets at the end of this season and starting completely over is the only solution.

Nobody, not a single player, currently on the Mets is worth saving. What has this roster done for Mets fans other than lose and lose badly? Carlos Beltran should have, as I suggested at the time, been traded straight up for Johan Santana. The Mets would have gotten rid of a player that hates playing in New York, given the Twins a CF the team badly needed and saved several young players for the now non-existent future. Personally, I'd cut Beltran today.

As I not very eloquently put it at the end of the 2007 season, Jose Reyes is the most overrated baseball player of this generation. For reasons I cannot fathom, general managers around the league would offer top prospects for Reyes. In 2010. I'm all for it. I'd ship him off yesterday, if at all possible.

David Wright is my favorite current Met, a hard-nosed player who gives his all 162 games out of the year. It pains me to say, however, that Wright has managed to actually get worse at third base every year. By 2012 I fear his errant throws will be hitting fans in the stands on a nightly basis. The Mets already have the team's future first baseman in Ike Davis. Sending Wright packing could land the Mets a future ace and two potential 2014 All-Stars.

Johan Santana is a player that I would like to see remain with the Mets. That doesn't mean I wouldn't dangle his name out there and review a few offers. When blowing up a team like the hapless Mets, everybody is trade bait.

The Mets franchise is one notorious for making the wrong move over and over again, then convincing fans foolish enough to believe anything that the team is a contender. It's not the popular thing in a city that demands pennants, but the future of the Mets depends on dismantling the Mets of today. Blow up the Mets, and the let the pieces land where they may.

Then when they lose for a few more years, everybody will be expecting it.
