Blue Coat K9 Web Filter- How it Works and Why It's Good

Laura Hickey
The New Year is a great time to clean out your old computer files and optimize your computer's protection. If you suspect users of the computer are logging onto inappropriate websites and can confirm due to the website history being deleted, you may want to check out Blue Coat K9 Web Protection.

This web protection is a content filter software that currently is free to use. It's simply and takes a few minutes to download at a size of 234.78K. Before downloading you'll need a license key. It's free to obtain. You enter a name, e-mail address and information on a drop down menu on how you heard about K9 web protection. In usually under 10 minutes you'll receive the license key number.

After you have downloaded the software, simply open it and unloaded it. During the installation process, you'll be asked to enter the license key number. Then when you want to create filters on what can and can't be allowed, a web browser opens up requiring you to choose a password. After a password has been created, enter it and choose which web categories to be blocked. You can customize or choose a predetermined level of protection.

There's categories from everything to abortion, pornographic, chat/instant messaging, gambling and more. Some websites such as Facebook, Myspace and Bloopdiary may end up being blocked but can be allowed by logging into the control panel and entering the website into an allowed list. There's even a way to view what content is being viewed or what was tried to be viewed but was blocked by K9 protection.

If you're worried about users being on the computer at all hours of the night, you can limit the time the Internet can be viewed by setting up time restrictions. There's also a time out setting. This means the administrator of k9 can choose if a certain amount of websites are viewed in a certain amount of time, there will be a time out period when no websites even allowed ones may be viewed.

There's even an option to choose only keywords to block. The user can choose what style of alerting a page has been blocked by either a dog bark or a page with a dog explaining this page has been blocked for it's inappropriate content. The best part is if you aren't happy with K9, you simply can uninstall the program. To check it out for yourself, log onto http://www1.k9webprotection.com/
