Blue Heaven Restaurant in Key West, FL

Denise Wilke
My husband and I recently were in Key West and we found this great restaurant on a side street in Bahama Village one morning when we were looking for somewhere to have breakfast. We followed the sign down a small entryway that opened up onto an outdoor courtyard filled with tables with umbrellas. We were a little hesitant to eat there because rain was in the forecast. We gave our name to the hostess and was told it would be a fifteen minute wait. We moved over to the bar where they had a great mimosa and bloody mary special.

After about ten minutes we were seated and our server immediately came over with menus and asked if we wanted something to drink. We both ordered coffee and he brought it back almost immediately. There was so much on the menu it was hard to decide. We glanced over to the people sitting next to us and they had the biggest pancakes we had ever seen. You could get banana, plain or pecan. They were spectacular.

They had a great selection of "benedicts" on the menu with everything from steak to lobster being offered. They had a magnificent lobster omelette for $13.99 and if we had not been going to walk so much that morning I would have ordered it, but I did not want to be so full. They also had yogurt with blueberries and granola for those who were looking for a healthy breakfast.

We decided to get the mushroom, cheese and onion omelette for $8.95. It came with the freshest, thickest slice of either multi-grain or banana bread I have ever seen. I got the multi-grain and my husband had the banana. We also split a side order of potatoes since looking around the plates we saw coming out of the kitchen were huge. The omelettes were half the size of the plate with swiss cheese oozing out of them and for the first time in a long time we got a breakfast that was steaming hot.

Our server was very attentive but did not make us feel rushed even though there was a line for tables. He was very polite and kept coming back to see if we needed anything else and refilling the coffee. His great service is an indication that the owners do actually care about their customers. It earned him an extra tip for being so nice and helpful. Breakfast for the two of us with tip was $27.99. No higher than if we went to a chain restaurant, but the atmosphere was much better and the service was wonderful.

On our way out we noticed that there was a gift shop and we browsed through there for a while. T-Shirts and the usual for a resort town. I highly recommend this restaurant and will go back there again the next time we are in town. The only difficulty we encountered was finding parking close to the restaurant. Not a fault of the restaurant, this is a chronic problem in all of Key West. We had to park about six blocks away, but the walk was worth it.

It really sounds a great place and I am glad you went off your diet and enjoyed the breakfast.
