Blue Horizon Organic White Bean Chicken Chili Product Review

A Chili Unlike Any Other!

Richard L. Meister Jr.
I'm always on the lookout for something different. And if it's organic, all the better. So when I saw Blue Horizon Organic White Bean Chicken Chili in Costco, I thought, I have never had chili made with white beans or chicken. I grabbed the six-can case and put it in my cart. The picture on the can shows a bowl of white beans with chunks of chicken, pieces of red pepper and a dab of sour cream on one side with a sprig of parsley. Quite intriguing, since I have never seen chili that wasn't brown. When I got the chili home, I found the bottom of the label read, white bean chicken chili made with organic beans and vegetables. I realized the product was not 100% organic, which the ingredients confirmed (see ingredients).

I was quite surprised at how much Blue Horizon Organic White Bean Chicken Chili tasted like regular chili. Of course, the meat tastes like chicken, but the peppers and spices gives it the taste of regular chili. The white beans are the same beans used in canned pork and beans. After I got used to the taste of chicken in a chili, instead of beef, I liked this chili enough to buy another case.

Ingredients: Prepared organic white kidney beans, chicken broth (water, chicken meat, chicken juices, sea salt, flavorings, potato flour, carrot powder, turmeric), chicken meat, organic onion, organic green chili peppers, organic chicken, organic roasted red peppers, organic olive oil, organic garlic, organic cumin, spices, sea salt, organic red pepper.

Nutrition Facts: Serving size is one cup and there are about two cups in one can. The percent daily value is based on a 2,000 calorie diet.

Calories are 220 with 45 from fat. Total fat is 5g or 8% daily value. Saturated fat, 1g or 5%; trans fat 0g. Cholesterol, 25g or 8%; sodium 410mg or 17%; total carbohydrate 27g or 9%; dietary fiber 10g or 40%; sugars 2g; protein, 18g. Vitamin A, 4%; vitamin C, 10%; calcium, 8%; Iron, 15%.

Although I like Blue Horizon Organic White Bean Chicken Chili, I'm giving it four out of five stars since the label is a bit misleading. I thought I was buying chili that was 100% organic even though the label clearly says, Made with organic beans & vegetables. The six-can case cost $9.99 or $1.665 a can or about eighty-three cents a cup (recommended serving size). This product is distributed by Blue Horizon Organic Seafood Company, Aptos, California. The beans and vegetables are certified organic by Quality Assurance International and inspected by the U.S. Department of Agriculture.

In a way, I'm a bit surprised a seafood company would make a chicken chili instead of a fish chili. On the other hand, I don't think too many people would buy a fish chili, but then again, there are fish tacos.

I bought this delicious chili at my local Costco a few months back and loved it. Now they aren't carrying it anymore. Do you know where I might be able to buy it?

No, Stormy, there is nothing on the can saying they are gluten free.

I recently discovered this product at Costco as well. Other than the very thin consistency, the product was good. I really expected it to be plenty thicker...it's almost soup-like. In that regard, I was disappointed, but I had it over quinoa to absorb the liquid better.
