Blue Law

Lee Hartsell
To get ready for a Blue Law Sunday, Grandpa filled his old
Ford gas tank with gas on Friday or Saturday. He knew that
he had to make it home on Friday and his gas had to get him
back to work on Monday. He allowed for any Saturday
driving that he had to do. The blue ford sat under the car
port on Sunday until Monday morning. Monday morning Grandpa
still had enough gas to make it to work in the middle of town.
Sunday was the one day of the week that everything was closed.
Beer was not bought on Sunday and after church we went to
grandma and grandpa's house.

We watched grandpa, as he sat in his wicker chair under the
old oak tree. You could hear the race, on the old white radio.
the announcer screamed out, "Start your engines." That meant
to be quiet, as they started off. We ate lunch there and played
with the brown puppies in the yard. It was a day of rest from the
long week. Respect the Sabbath and keep it holy, "is what they
always said."
