Bluestone WMA's Sherman Ballard Adventure Section
Bluestone Wildlife Management Area is designed with an old-fashioned building using a wide open air design alongside an enclosed bathroom. The building has six units of bunk beds, a complete kitchen area, complete restroom and an enclosed porch area. The particular building is actually utilized often for family reunions, wedding ceremonies, business receptions, and hunting functions. The building has a rustic theme giving you the feel of primitive living in southern West Virginia. So there is not any TV sets, ac or even telephones in this specific overnight accommodation at the WMA. If you plan on staying at this building you need to make a reservation and pay for the rental before setting up camp.
At the Bluestone WMA you cannot rent a boat or canoes so you should either bring your own or bring a friend along that has one to utilize during your visit at the WMA. Also, if you plan on fishing or hunting while at the WMA you must purchase and have in your possession the required license for either hunting or fishing in West Virginia. Bluestone personnel regularly make rounds around the WMA checking for licenses.
Camping Areas at Bluestone Wildlife Management Area
When camping at Bluestone WMA there are numerous camping locations for you to utilize and enjoy during your stay. Indian Mills has 15 camping sites, Keatley has 15 camping sites, Bertha has 55 camping sites on Bluestone Lake, the Mouth of Indian Creek has over 100 camping sites available on the New River, Shanklin's Ferry has 80 camping sites on the New River, Cedar Branch also has 45 camping sites on the New River and Bull Falls has an additional 20 camping sites on Bluestone Lake to use. You must check-in at the Bluestone WMA to obtain a camping spot. Also, all the camping sites mentioned above costs $12
Campsite Rules and Regulations at Bluestone Wildlife Management Area
All camping sites are rented on a first come basis. You cannot have any alcohol or other illegal items at a campsite within the Bluestone WMA. Also, you cannot hunt within the campground areas. You must hunt only is designated areas as established within Bluestone Wildlife Management Area. You can bring a cat or dog with you during your camping trip; however, they must be leashed with a leash no more than 10 foot. If you decide to do horseback riding then if you want you can have your horse at the campsite.
All visitors utilizing a camp site must checkout by 12 noon. Also, each campsite is only authorized to have 2 motor vehicles at each site. If you plan on using a camper then only 1 is allowed at each designated site. If you have a large family that will be camping at a site then you can have a couple of tents pitched at a single site.
Recreation and Outdoor Activities at Bluestone WMA
You can hunt and fish at Bluestone Wildlife Management Area as long as you hold the required state license and have it available if asked by Bluestone staff.
If you bring your horse then you can keep them at the stable at Bluestone WMA for a fee. Also, you can partake in canoeing and boating on Bluestone Lake as long as you bring your own boat or canoe. Also, there are various picnic areas throughout the WMA for use; however, all areas must be cleaned of trash once you leave.
If you would like to golf then right up the road a little from Bluestone WMA you can go to Pipestem State Park that features an 18-hole par 3 course as well as a regular 18-hole course.
Bluestone Wildlife Management Area is situated in the southern part of West Virginia and offers all kinds of outdoor activities for people. You can get to Bluestone WMA off of I-64 at exit 139 the Sandstone/Hinton exit.
