Bluetooth Advertising: A Primer

Julie Richards
Bluetooth advertising has been popular in the overseas market for some time. When a business uses bluetooth advertising, they can target a specific marketing group. Bluetooth advertising allows the business to find a marketing niche. Target groups and market niches have always let to bigger profits. With bluetooth advertising, a business can get clients that are looking for their product or service without spending big bucks on other ad campaigns.

How does bluetooth advertising work? The concept is like a virtual commercial. Bluetooth proximity marketing allows a business to have a stationary unit that sends out a signal to passing bluetooth devices. This could be a cell phone, PDA, or laptop. The average signal range is 30 feet. This signal can only be picked up by bluetooth devices that are on and in the "discover" mode. Most devices that have bluetooth capabilities do not need pairing to receive text or graphics messages. This works well for the business that uses bluetooth advertising.

Bluetooth proximity advertising programs are written to protect the consumer as well as help the business owner. First and foremost is the fact that any consumer has the right to register on a type of "do not solicit" list. The bluetooth marketing system sends out a signal for any devices in the area. The signal is sent back that bluetooth devices have been detected. These devices are checked against the anti-solicitation list. The device is then checked against a list of devices that have already been sent the advertising information within a certain time frame. The time frame can be determined by the business, but is usually 6 to 12 hours. This prevents someone walking around the mall from getting 30 messages from one store in an hour.

Bluetooth marketing is not just for advertising. Let me give you an example of what bluetooth advertising can do for a small company. A restaurant has just opened. This business can use bluetooth advertising to send out daily specials. An entire menu can be transmitted by bluetooth advertising. The restaurant can keep patrons informed of foods they are out of. They can advertise a menu option. Bluetooth advertising allows the business to offer specials only to patrons who answer the ad. This can bring in more customers. Reservations can be confirmed with a bluetooth marketing system. This form of advertising is limited only by the individual business.

Bluetooth advertising is not just for businesses either. Private groups and organizations can post special events for members. Members can be informed of upcoming meetings. Messages can be sent and retrieved between members. Members can vote on issues pertaining to the group with bluetooth marketing Cancellations can be posted. Again, with bluetooth marketing the possibilities are endless.

Small business, large corporation, colleges, non-profit organizations can all benefit from bluetooth advertising. The only thing limiting them is their imagination.
