Blu-ray, which is also known as Blu-ray disc (BD) is a next generation optical disc format. The format enables recording, rewriting, and playback of high-definition video (HD). Blu-ray discs also store large amounts of data, they offer five times the storage capacity of traditional DVDs. It is called Blu-ray because of the blue violet laser that is used to read and write the disks.

So the first question is will Blu-ray disc replace replace DVDs? Yes that is the expectation. Just like DVDs came along and replaced VHS tapes. The Blu-ray players are backwards compatible --meaning they will still play DVDs-- so your DVD collection won't become obsolete. The Blu-ray players actually upscale your regular DVDs to make them look even better then they did before.

Why should you upgrade to Blu-ray? Well if you have seen HDTV you know how sharp and clear the picture looks, and how vivid the colors are. High-definition offers five times the amount of detail then the standard definition does. Blu-ray also supports high definition audio. In addition to the higher quality audio and video, the extra storage capacity allows room for extra content and special features. Because of the greatly enhanced high definition video and audio, and the advanced networking features and interactivity, Blu-ray is a Huge leap forward in the movie viewing experience, and will offer consumers a unbelievable HD experience.

Is Blu-ray actually going to stay around? Seven of the eight major movie studios currently support Blu-ray discs. Blu-ray also has the support of Major electronic manufactures including Sony, Panasonic, Philips, Samsung, Pioneer, Sharp, JVC, Hitachi, Mitsubishi, TDK, Thomson, LG, Apple, HP and Dell. With all this backing and support by major company's you can be pretty sure Blu-ray is not only going to be around for a while but it is going to be the choice for the future.

I currently have a Blu-ray player and I am very impressed with quality of the movies. I can definitely see a difference in the sharpness and the picture in the Blu-ray discs. Not only that but I love the way it up-scales my DVDs, it makes my old DVDs look sharper and and better. I am also very pleased with the expansive variety of movies being released on Blu-ray. I definitely think Blu-ray is going to be the wave of the future.
