Blockbuster stores currently charge about fifty cents more per Blu-ray rental than a regular DVD rental. That is almost $80 per year over DVD rental cost for the same movies. You also have a limited selection of movies currently in Blu-ray format.
If you have a major desire to see high definition movies be prepared to pay about $3,000 or more for a 52" HD monitor, perhaps $600 to $1,000 more for HD capable sound systems, $500 in addition for a good Blu-ray Player or nearly $1,000 for a good Blu-Ray player/recorder combination, and an ongoing cost for higher movie purchases or rentals. If you are not technically inclined add a couple of hundred for one of the various geek services to attach all the units and program your remote.
Personally, I have chosen to become good friends with my neighbor who has already spent this money and loves to have people come over to watch his investment in action.

Post a CommentYou have to have pretty deep pockets. Excellent article. :-)
Scott, sounds interesting. Can The PS3 play the old DVDs and increase enhance their appearance on screen like a good Blu-ray player. How much did your whole set up cost soup to nuts including delivery and installation and including your blu-ray 5.1 uncompressed sound system? I'd love to have that setup. I just need to publish a thousand more paid articles ;-)
Actually, you can get a decent Blu-ray player for under 400 dollars now, and by next Christmas around 200 dollars. The ideal Blu-Ray player is the Sony Playstation 3, which in addition to blu-ray capability, offers state of the art games, internet access on your TV, and automatically updates its capabilities thru broadband connection on it. The broadband connection also allows some fantastic interactive features on movie releases as well as music compiliations like the upcoming Neil Young collection, which will allow buyers of the discs to be able to view more songs and other content by Young thru the broadband connecting to the website the blu-ray allows you access to, for FREE! The possibilities are endless for this technology. Also, you can get a decent sound system for under 200 dollars, and one of the fantastic blu-ray technologies you didn't mention is 5.1 uncompressed digital audio, whic makes even the lw end sound systems sound amazing. As for the TV, i have a 50 inch Sony SXRD
I've wondered what was meant by "blu-ray technology". Now I know all that I need to know. Roget's synonyms for "Blu-Ray" must be "exorbitant, extreme, immoderate, inordinate, overabundant, overmuch, undue, extravagant". Thanks for the info!
Hopefully soon the price will come down as they become more and more common. Thanks for sharing this info!
Wow... pricey...
Great information. I didn't realize that the rentals cost more.
