Board Game Groups for Adults

Stormy Brooke Swain
Board games aren't typically what an adult would think of as fun, but add some food, good conversation and a drink or two and there is a hidden party in that game. A simple board game can host laughs and stories about childhood family times with friends. Starting a group, establishing locations for the group and attending the meetings will keep the board game group alive for years to come.

Compile a list of people you know to start the group. Get on the internet and publish your group on Yahoo or other local social sites. Recruit new members on social sites that you belong to and start putting together the group member list. Try to keep a certain radius of miles in mind when inviting people to take part in your group. Traveling long distances to be social is a turn off for many and they would just rather watch a movie.

Choose if your group is going to be hosted in one house or if each member is going to host a game night, once every few months. Even if the group is in one home, there should be a new host each meeting night. The host should provide snacks and a new board game. The host should tell the group members about the rules of the new game, so that they won't have to be studied during the meeting. Have a box that holds all of the accumulated games in it and is given to the next weeks host at that meeting. The idea is to have several different games going at the same time. Members should be responsible for bringing drinks and each host needs to establish what they expect as far as allowing alcohol or not.

A meeting consists of three things, playing games, conversation and deciding the next location or host. The time should be set for each meeting, and keep in mind that the point of the meeting is to enjoy board games and conversation. Most meetings will last for a half a day or around four hours on a Saturday or Sunday. This gives people plenty of time to play certain games that require a long amount of time. If a host wants to change it up and do themes, like poker night it gives everyone a little change of pace and keeps the meetings interesting.

Enjoy socializing and laughing over new and old board games. The meetings are a great way to introduce new members into an already established group, because there is something to do that everyone has in common. Some people have a great time with games they played while they were kids and can't wait to let it all go and have some kid fun again.
