Boarding Your Pet at a Boarding Facility

Why Boarding May Not Be the Best Choice for Your Pet

If you travel quite frequently and have a pet, you have probably either had someone stay at your house or you have taken him/her to a boarding facility. Boarding your pet is very convenient for you and takes a lot of stress off your shoulders knowing that your pet is in good hands. For many pets, boarding is no problem and they settle right in. However, for others, boarding becomes a major ordeal. If you are concerned that your pet stresses too much while at the boarding facility, you may want to consider other options. So what other options are there?

Many pet owners resort to having someone stay at their home with the pet or have someone make daily visits. There are many of us, however, that do not want someone else in our home and need to be sure that the person can be trusted. There are many pet sitting businesses that provide these services. Granted, many of these services cost more than your typical boarding facility, but it puts your mind at ease knowing that your pet is at home and being taken care of and is not in a strange building.

You can also check at your veterinarian's office to see if any of the staff provide pet sitting services. Many of the technicians provide these services. The benefit of having a technician from your clinic pet sit is that they will most likely know your pet and if he/she is on any medications they will know how to administer those medications properly. Second, if there are any problems, the technician has the knowledge and can also relay things back to your veterinarian. If something happens while you are away, you should leave your credit card £ with your veterinarian's office so that they can treat your pet if something does happen. It is very rare that something bad would happen while you are away, but there are always possibilities.

So if you feel that your pet will stress out too much at a boarding facility, then I would consider alternate options and avoid placing your pet in such a stressful situation. Finding out if boarding is a major stressor is difficult and only known when you first board your pet and the staff at the facility notify you that your pet is stressing out too much. Unfortunately, many boarding facilities do not relay things back to owners about the pet's stay. Consequently, the owner thinks that every time Fluffy comes in, he/she is doing great and loves the place. However, little do you know, Fluffy is having a complete nervous breakdown after you leave.
