Bobby Bowden is Florida State University Football

Vonda Menard
Bobby Bowden has coached the Florida State Seminoles football team, for 34 years. Unfortunately for the 79 year old coach, the Seminoles have struggled in recent seasons. As with most things in life, it's what have you done lately that people look at, but Bowden's past success deserves to be examined.

Just last season, Florida State was ACC Atlantic Division Co-Champions. In Bobby Bowden's career in Florida, the Seminoles have had only one losing season, his first. They've won 13 division championships, and 2 National Championships.

This season has been difficult for Florida State. Their current record, 2-3, with loses coming against, a tough Miami team by 4 points, South Florida, and Boston College. Florida State's two victories came against, Jacksonville State, and an impressive road victory against a tough Brigham Young University team. Florida State's play has been inconsistent this year, which has been frustrating, and it's clear watching the Seminoles, the talent level isn't what it's been in the past.

In Florida, the University of Miami has 43 year old head coach Randy Shannon, and the University of Florida has, 45 year old Urban Meyer, maybe the powers that be at Florida State believe they need to get younger at the head coach position too. Bobby Bowden has not only been the face of Florida State, he built the program up from nothing, and now he's being pressured to step down. Maybe Bowden's best coaching days are behind him, but he deserves to go out with respect and dignity. This man was faithful to the Florida State football program, never leaving for other opportunities, he deserves the same treatment.

Time will tell if Bowden and Florida State are able to turn this season around, and if they aren't, it will be interesting to see if Bowden is given the opportunity to return next year. While there has been criticism of Bowden, it's nice to see former FSU players come to Bowden's defense. "If they fire Bowden, I will make sure no FSU alumni go back to visit EVER, no donations- NOTHIING ... '' Dockett wrote. "To disrespect him in this manner and place the blame on him for the football program, that's ignorant," Sanders told the newspaper.

Bobby Bowden has been one of the greatest coaches in college history, the ending to his brilliant coaching career, should be written by him.

I graduated from FSU in 1969. I went through many lean years with the football program. Bobby Bowden deserves to stay as long as he wants. He brought this university from the basement to national champs. Times may be lean now, but not as lean as the pre-Bowden years.
