Body Beauty: Tips to Dressing Slim

Tips to Dressing Slim

Yvonne M. Glasgow, Ph.D.
You do not have to stuff yourself into a corset in order to look better in your clothes, you just have to know what clothes are best suited to your body type and size. One of the biggest mistakes that women make is wearing clothes that are much too big for them, or fit wrong in all the wrong places. We tend to think that if it is baggy it will help to cover up our imperfections, when in fact all this does is makes us look large. Here are five tips to dressing better that will help make you feel, and look, more beautiful!

Tip 1- Know Your Size

Do not buy the wrong size of clothing. If you buy something that is too small you will have bulges sticking out "who knows where". If you buy something that is too big you will end up looking bigger than you are (or like you are wearing a tent). Yes, different brands of clothing fit differently, which leads us to the second tip!

Tip 2- Always Use the Dressing Room

Try it on before you make a commitment to your clothing. You would not marry a guy without dating him first, right? So date your clothing choices by stepping into the dressing room and giving them a try. Size is not the only thing that matters, though all women know that it is important, but how the garment looks on you is important also. If you do not "try it before you buy it" you may not realize that polka-dots or paisley just are not for you!

Tip 3- Enhance Your Assets

If you are a little big on top (or bottom) but you have a great waistline, then you should wear clothing that shows off that great waistline. You do not want to hide the good parts just because of some bad part. Wear empire tops to tame a top heavy frame. Avoid tank tops if you have a thicker shoulder and upper arm area. Instead choose a short sleeve, t-shirt-like top.

Tip 4- The Top Must Not Exactly Match the Bottom

This rule counts for both color and style. If you are wearing a busy top (like dots or stripes) you should make sure to wear a solid colored bottom, and vice versa. If you are wearing a flowing skirt you should opt for a more fitting top. Leave flowing blouses for use with pencil skirts and fitted pants. The only time you should EVER wear a top that exactly matches your bottoms is at the gym, or track, as in sweats, or your Pjs at bedtime!

Tip 5- Always Be Confident

Beauty is not just about how you look, it is also about how you feel and how you express yourself to others. The super model on the cover of your Cosmo may look good on the outside but she could be a very ugly person on the inside. "Don't judge a book by it's cover!" Having the right attitude and believing in yourself will make all the difference in how beautiful you feel and how beautiful others see you as.
