Body Composition Scales: Brands to Start With

Weight scales? Hang it up. These days, people want to know more and more about what they're putting into their bodies, and the effects it is having on them. Health conscious individuals are turning to personal trainers to help monitor the condition of their body. Now, you can do this in your own home.

Body Composition Measuring Scales are quickly replacing the tradition weight scales. These machines have the capability to measure your BMI, or body mass index, bone density, body fat index, resting metabolism, and body age. Not many people require quite that much knowledge, true, but if you are looking to improve your overall physical health, this scale is a wonderful way to keep on track. Not to mention, merely keeping up with one's weight isn't enough, since muscle tends to weigh more than fat. The best thing, is to keep up with your fat percentage.

Hammacher Schlemmer offers a scale that does all of the above, and then some. This device sends a harmless bioelectrical current throughout the body, and collects measurements. The weight limit on this machine is 330 pounds. It saves your personal profile and readings for up to 180 days. The hand held display is lightweight and easy to read. This model is rated at the top for performance and accuracy. It uses four AA batteries, and retails for $119.95.

Harder to find but well worth it if you can, the Tanita BC552 Ironman Innerscan Body Monitor is geared more toward the active individual or athlete. This product offers a four person memory, fat, muscle, and water recall, an accurate body composition monitor, and easy to read display. It also reads your basal metabolic rate. This floor scale runs around $129.00.

HoMedics offers the HealthStation Plus. This scale measures body fat and muscle mass, water weight, bone mass, and includes a daily calorie predictor. There are settings for both normal and athletic modes. $99.99.

This company also offers the TriFitness HealthStation. This version includes three different fitness levels, ten user memories, invisible electrodes, and a lithium battery. At $49.95, this is probably the best buy you will find, and is perfect for someone who is first starting to monitor body fat percentages.

Omron provides us with the HBF- 510W Full Body Sensor. This floor model scale fills all the requirements of a full body composition scale, and also measures through both the hands and the feet for increased accuracy. This model retails at $ 79.99, and is the easiest to use on the market.

Take your time when purchasing a body composition scale. Do you homework, and check out the additional models these companies offer. Make sure the model you are considering matches the goals you are setting for yourself. Don't take the plunge into a newer, more advanced model until you understand the basics of measurement.
