Body Language - A Powerful Form of Communication

Introduction

Shan-Lyn Forsythe
Whether most of us realize it or not, there's another type or form of communication which we can exhibit while we use speech to articulate our messages. And what is that? It's called "body language".

Social Body Language

As the social beings that we be, we cannot live without each other. Communication starts as soon as we are in contact with others. When this happens, we generally make use of written or spoken language. However, we can also communicate without words. This particular type of communication will reveal to other people the type of relationships we'd like to have with them. This mode of social communication can prove, oftentimes, to be more effective than mere words alone.

Body language can send out to our "visual" listeners a lot more information than what our verbal speech relays first-hand. A trained observer will come to understand what another person is really trying to send out in the way of physically-expressed messages.

Statistically, more than 50% of our physical inter-actions with people around us indicate the usage of body language which help surrounding individuals to receive a better grasp of what we're endeavoring to convey. Therefore, learning to consciously become aware of our physical expressions can help us in knowing how we can either repel or attract people around ourselves.
Hence, the usage of body language is a valuable tool in relationship forming.

Subconscious Body Language

Usually, body language unconsciously happens. However, the body language we use will reflect to a vast extent the quality of the communication. Therefore, it is significant to understand that we must take into consideration not only another person's body language but our own, as well.

We must also learn that body language can have varying translations in different cultures. How we decide to interpret body language relies or depends on the situation, the race or culture and the type of relationship we have with an individual.

Taking this factor into consideration, we come to understand that no two signals are alike world-wide. If we don't take this into account, we could very well set ourselves up to some serious mis-understandings.

A communication to express feelings

Body language is used mostly to express our feelings. For instance, if we happen not to like someone for whatever reasons we may hold, it is often difficult to verbally express this to a person. However, body language can unintentionally or intentionally relay a message without verbal necessity.

People may expose their true feelings unconsciously through their body language. Research has indicated that people tend to pay more attention to, and believe moreso, their observational impression on how a person acts through body language than through word usage.

Knowing the importance of body language

It is important to understand and know how we come across to people around ourselves. By so doing, we can learn to alleviate signals which can be mixed in our relationship communications. If we want to leave positive impressions behind, it is therefore significant to learn how to control or become more aware of our body language. Our own body language can either work for or against us, hence, it is necessary to understand this powerful implement within ourselves. By so doing, our relationships with people will be more productively active.
