Herron was allegedly running a gun-toting, drug-dealing crew that filled the Gowanus Houses in Boerum Hill with crack and heroin. They intimidated residents so no one would dare snitch. Herron beat a murder rap in 2002 by intimidating witnesses. And the crew is suspected of four other murders, reports the NY Daily News.
A unique aspect of this case is its involvement of modern technology. Herron is an aspiring rapper. He made videos and tweeted about his illegal activities. You can watch Diggs' videos on Yahoo and see the extremity of this case, especially in "We Run NYC." Warning! The material is adult.
Our society has several problems that allowed this illegal activity and it will continue as long as the problems continue.
Herron is an ex-convict. Our justice system allowed him back into society, clearly, not rehabilitated.
The crew possessed guns. Our gun laws and enforcement of them are inadequate.
The arrests are the result of a four-year probe involving 65 drug buys by undercover agents, reports the NY Post. Please! It should not take that long to get criminals off the street.
The crew stems from an environment conducive to its behavior. Let's face it, if these guys had grown up on Park Avenue, they'd have a different outlook on life. Society needs to address its inequality in living conditions.
Societal problems are not excuses for these criminals. They are adults capable of making decisions and responsible for them. You do the crime; you do the time.
However, societal problems are contributing factors to crime. Until we solve our problems, the problem of gun-toting, drug-dealing crews is not over.
