When it comes to summer, strawberry shortcake is one of the best desserts you can have. While I've made strawberry shortcake many times, I rarely order it in a restaurant. However, while eating at one of my favorite restaurants, I decided I wanted to a light dessert because I had eaten too much at dinner. I should have known better though. Bogart's serves up big portions and their strawberry shortcake was no different.
When the waitress brought out our desserts, I was stunned. The cake was two layers thick and about as long and wide as a dollar bill. The stacked up cake was probably at least 4 inches tall and was. smothered in whipped cream and sliced, sweetened strawberries. It looked absolutely decadent and while I was quite full, I made room for this bad boy.
When I took my first bite, I discovered something unexpected. The yellow layers of cake were filled with vanilla ice cream. I had never had ice cream in my strawberry shortcake and it was incredibly delicious. It added an additional texture that sent this cake over the top. The strawberries were also perfectly sweetened, though I would have liked to have seen more of them. As for the whipped cream, there was tons of it and that's a good thing, because you can never have enough whipped cream.
In all honesty, this dessert was big enough to feed two, if not more. The portion was so huge that it was hard to believe that this dessert cost less than $5. Many other restaurants in the area would have charged over $6 and you would have received a much smaller portion. Not to mention, that you probably wouldn't have received a dessert that was homemade.
I highly recommend visiting Bogart's the next time you visit Sylva, North Carolina and definitely recommend their strawberry shortcake. Just remember to save room because this dessert is huge. You may even want to share it with your dinner guests. Then again, it's so good, you might not. I would give this dessert 5 out 5 stars and plan to order it again and again and again.

Post a CommentI don't normally eat strawberry shortcake, but you whetted my appetite with the description of the dessert you tried! I wouldn't have thought of adding vanilla ice cream either, but that sounds like a good idea. Thanks for the review!

mmmmm good
I love strawberry shortcake. I'll jump in my private jet first thing in the morning and meet you there at about six tomorrow evening--yeah, right. If I had that type of money--I'll get serious now. I do love strawberry shortcake but I never considered it a light dessert. There's a buffet I go to every now and then that has a mixed berry shortcake. It's basically strawberries and blueberries. At first I wasn't sure I would like it, but once I tried it, I found it was pretty good. When I was growing up we had fresh strawberries right out of our garden. Top them with fresh whipped cream made from the cream our cows gave and put it all on a homemade cake. It's a wonder I wasn't as fat as an outhouse. Sorry, poor example--fat as our cows--ah, let's just say fat.
