Over in the USA Today Coaches' poll, they have Boise State down at No. 5, but Virginia Tech up at No. 6, showing that the coaches think these are pretty evenly matched teams. The difference is negligible in the first preseason rankings, but the fact that both teams are so highly ranked needs to be recognized on Tuesday. If every team above them wins by crushing a much weaker opponent, many of whom were paid to come play the higher ranked team, then even more respect needs to be given to the Boise State vs. Virginia Tech game. Will it? Or will there continue to be bias against Boise State out in the West?
The Boise State vs. Virginia Tech has a scheduled kick-off time of 5 p.m. PST (8 p.m. EST) on Monday, Sept. 6, with the game taking place at Fed Ex Field in Landover, Maryland. Live coverage will be provided on ESPN and ESPN3.com, and it is definitely a must-see game for any fan of college football. This same Boise State team went undefeated in the 2009 college football season, and they are returning with a nice winning streak at their backs. Their last game was a 17-10 victory over then-undefeated TCU in the Fiesta Bowl. Now Virginia Tech will try to end that winning streak.
To be perfectly honest, the entire season for Boise State rests on a victory Monday night. If they lose to Virginia Tech, the doubters around football will probably knock them out of the top 10 for the remainder of the 2010 season. Virginia Tech, though, could probably survive a loss and still play themselves into a BCS Bowl game in January. Neither team wants to start the season with a loss, though, and that means that we can expect quite the game on Monday. Whoever wins this game deserves a bump in the ranks, and the coaches need to recognize that by voting the winner up to at least the No. 2-ranked team in the country.
