In the 1930's the film industry in India operated very much along the lines of our own film studios in Hollywood. In the 1950's which is considered the "golden age for indian films", many star-studded, high profile films were made. In 1955, Devdas followed in 1957 by Pyassa (the thirsty one). In the 1940's to 1950's the emergence of Lata Mangeshkar, a woman who dominated the music industry for the next half century and who was a playback singer, the off-camera voice, to which the actors and actresses would mime.
In 1961 Shammi Kapoor exploded onto the screen in the hit film Junglee (the wild one) which was a brightly colored romantic film. The 1980's was the lowest point for bollywood films however, the mid 1990's, when cable and sattelite TV arrived to India, the world was opened to bollywood films. Today, Bollywood's future success really depends on how quickly the industry can adapt to the demands in the market.
THE FILM DHOOM 2 is an example of the latest movie to come out of Bollywood. Dhoom 2 stars Ayshwayra Ri, Hrithik Rosham, Abhishek Bachchan, Uday Chopra and Baptista Basu. In Dhoom 2 the main characters of Abhisek Bachchan and Uday Chopra have to carry forward their characters from the original film Dhoom 1. This is not an easy task to achieve however they manage to do this with an exciting, carnival like atmosphere. The line between the law breakers and the law enforcers is a very thine one and it is hard to know where it is drawn.
The film moves between two locactions from Mumbi to Brazil, hence the carnival atmosphere, and is one of the most heady, fast paced and superbly-crafted bollywood film to be released in the last few years. There is a love scene with Aishwaya and Hrithik displays wonderfully executed inner and outer controlled movements. See the movie to understand that last statement. The two whisper about love and exchange intense kiss which will leave you gasping for breath.
This film is on a par with a Hollywood big screen spectacle and if you are a fan of bollywood it is a "must see."
All in all, Bollywood movies have survived almost nine decades which has blossomed from a tiny rosebud into a fully fledged scented rose. It is an empire all of its own. India is now one of the world's largest film producers and during the time of bollywood we have been given approximately 27,000 movies and thousands of documentaries. The emergence of the new genre films such as Dhoom 2 still have India on top of the world when it comes to making movies. If they manage to keep the standard of their productions high then there is no reason that bollywood films will not be around for the next nine decades.
