Bon Bons for the Holidays: Christmastime Bon Bon Recipes

Paula Myers
One of my favorite things to do around the holidays is make Bon Bons. My mom always made them around Christmas time, and I use her recipe for Coconut Bon Bons. I can remember her giving my grandfather a boxful and him hiding them underneath his bed from my grandmother. My mom knew that my grandmother wouldn't let him have as many as he wanted. It was something that he looked forward to every year. My grandmother never found those Bon Bons. Some of you may not know what a Bon Bon is. A Bon Bon can be any confection with a fondant center, often with fruit or nuts, covered in fondant or chocolate, or any other confection consisting of a sweet center covered by a loose sugar or flavored coating. Here are my favorite Bon Bon recipes. I hope they become yours as well.

This is my mom's recipe for Coconut Bon Bon's. I like to carry on the tradition.

Coconut Bon Bons

1 pound powdered sugar
1 stick margarine, melted
2 tsp. Vanilla
a little evaporated milk
1 package coconut
1 cup pecans, chopped
12 ounce package milk chocolate chips
¼ pound paraffin

Melt margarine, add powdered sugar, vanilla, coconut, and pecans. Add just enough evaporated milk to mixture to be able to form into balls. Mixture needs to be thick. Make balls and chill. Melt chocolate chips and paraffin in double boiler. Pick up balls with fork underneath and dip into chocolate. Put on wax paper on cookie sheet Stick in refrigerator until Bon Bons get hard.

One of my friends mother-in-law made this Peanut Butter Bon Bon for the annual Christmas party at one of my past jobs. They were delicious. I asked for the recipe and here it is.

Peanut Butter Bon Bons

1-½ cups graham cracker crumbs
1 cup creamy peanut butter
1 cup melted butter
1 pound powdered sugar
12 ounce package milk chocolate chips
½ bar paraffin or 1 tablespoon of melted shortening

Mix graham cracker crumbs, peanut butter, butter, and powdered sugar together. Make into balls and stick in the freezer. Melt the chocolate chips and paraffin (or melted shortening) in double boiler. I just put in a sauce pan on low heat and stir constantly. Then take the balls and dip into the melted chocolate. Place on cookie sheet and stick in the refrigerator for at least 1 hour so the chocolate will get hard.

Bon Bons are really easy to make. They are a festive candy for the holidays. Help celebrate Christmas time with your kids by spending time together in the kitchen. Start a new holiday tradition this year.

i am looking for some alternative coatings for the bon bons instead of just chocolate- i remember my aunt making the bon bons but they were dipped in brightly colored coatings- white/pink/lt. green/etc- any ideas would be greatly appreciated-thanks!

I've always wanted to try making bon bons but thought they might be too difficult and time consuming. You've inspired me to give it a try!
