What Draws Crowds to the Bond County Fair?
The Bond County Fair is organized by a large number of people from the Greenville area. There are many Superintendents and Directors along with a President and a Fair Board. Countless volunteers work endless hours, both year round and during the Bond County Fair to insure that everything goes according to plan.
Attractions range from carnival rides for the kids, to livestock shows for the young and old alike. There are quilt shows, a Little Miss and a Queen contest and numerous other exhibits and vendors. This fair is structured much as it began back in 1948, yet it even attracts the young to its many different venues and booths.
This year's schedule starts off with a tractor pull and the opening of the carnival rides. Throughout the next 6 days, visitors can enjoy a 4-H steer show, harness racing, a tractor parade and even an Antique Farm Machinery Expo.
Thrill seekers can attend the demolition derby and watch from the grandstands as locals and people from surrounding areas crash each other with old cars that have been purchased specifically for this event.
For those who don't know, a demolition derby is where cars are lined up around an infield and when the event starts, the driver must go in reverse and hit other cars. The object is to be the last car left running! It can get loud and dirty, and not only from the cars.
The people in the grandstand yell and cheer as a friend or favorite driver crashes into and stops car after car. There may also be some thrills and gasps as a car receives a hard hit, or even gets raised to its side! A demolition derby is definitely not for the faint of heart!
