Bone Marrow Drive in Phelps, KY. Was Well Advertised and the Family Thanks Those Who Came Out

The bone marrow drive for ten-year-old Kyle Dean Smith in Phelps, KY. on February 14, 2009, was very well advertised. Smith's mother and aunt grew up in Phelps and attended school there. It was to take place at the Phelps High School between the hours of 2 and 5 P.M.

Three local radio stations carried community announcements regarding it for several days prior to the event. Two of these radio stations were WXCC Coal Country Radio 96.5 FM and WVKM The Kicks 106.7 FM. It was featured on WYMT TV News every day of the week leading up to it. Smith's family and friends drove over 200 miles in order to post flyers in every business that would allow it. The Appalachian News Express printed an article about the event to inform its readership of the details. A large sign alerting the community was put up at the only intersection in Phelps. It was also placed on the marquee of the High School where it was to take place. Every possible effort was made.

3 people came and were tested.

Smith's family would like to thank these three from the bottoms of their hearts as well as express great, unbounded appreciation for Kevin Wolford and Quimby Prater who helped to organise and advertise the event, brought refreshments for those who might come, and volunteered their time to help with the swabbing. Not to be overlooked are WYMT TV News, all three radio stations, and all those wonderful businesses that sported the flyers for their customers to see. Every bit of help, however small or great, is a beautiful step toward saving this boy's life.
