Bonny looked around her living room. It was small, but she enjoyed it. She knew that it just was not her style, though. She knew she would have to ask if she could paint the walls. The sun was setting and the shadows on the white walls were unsettling. Bonny did not like white walls and she never had.
In her small living room there was a pink recliner that faced the television set. On one of the other walls there was a love seat that faced her bedroom door. If she sat there, she could see her pink dust ruffle flapping from the wind as she had opened her bedroom window.
Even though Bonny had just moved into the apartment, she had lived in Centerville, Indiana for ten years. She first moved to Centerville to continue her schooling. She lived in the dorms. After she finished with school, she started her own practice. As she saved up money to be able to live on her own, she lived in hotels, hostels, and with friends. It was not Bonny's style to be dependent on others, but she was glad that she had friends who would help her.
To the side of the television a doorway to the small kitchen could be seen. Bonny had stacked all of her boxes in the kitchen. She sighed as she realized how much she would have to unpack. She was not looking forward to doing any of those chores. In fact, she would rather be at work.
The sun had set, but Bonny did not realize the time until she glanced at the clock on her cell phone. Bonny heaved a sign of relief and sat in her recliner. She pulled out a remote control from a pocket on the side and turned on the television.
It took her awhile to figure out what she wanted to watch, but she then settled on AO, which was one of her favorite television shows. AO had been running for over fifteen years and Bonny was hooked immediately. She loved to critique the different medical conditions or odd problems that were mentioned. At times she would scoff at the television judging that those conditions would never happen. Other times she would laugh and decide that the television show really needed to focus on some of these people taking better care of their health.
As she settled in to watch that night's episode of AO, she heard the faint notes of "Strawberry Fields Forever." She wondered if it was playing on the television, but then she realized that it was her cell phone ringing. She had left it in her pocket and was sitting on it.
Bonny stood up and took the phone out of her pocket. She flipped open the pink SlimPhone and answered, "Hello?"
Her hello was met with a thick Mexican accent, "Hello, you did not forget, did you?"
Bonny smiled and laughed. "No, I did not forget, Miguel. I am watching AO right now. I will watch after that."
"You and that show. What is it again?"
"Accidents and Operations. It has more than just that, though. There are some situations about illnesses, too. However, it is about the happenings in a hospital."
"Bueno. Me amo."
"I love you, too."
Bonny closed her phone. This time she did not put it back in her pocket. She sat back down in the recliner and stuck her phone into the pocket with the remote. AO's plot that night was about a small boy who had severe sinusitis like symptoms. Yet, no matter what they doctors prescribed, they did not go away.
Bonny thought to herself, "If that were real, I could fix the problem in just a few minutes." She smiled at that thought and at the thought that many of her young patients called her Dr. Bonny. Though she had no real degree to be considered a doctor, she felt like she deserved that title. However, she also loved the fact that she did not get too close to her patients. She knew them by numbers. She felt that it was not a good idea to get to know her patients. After all, she did not want to get involved in their lives. The only times she knew anything about her patients were if she knew them as something different before they were her patients.
Miguel was the only difference. He walked into Bonny's chiropractic office and scheduled an appointment. She saw him from the back while her secretary took down his information. She became impatient for the day of his appointment.
When it was finally time for his appointment, Bonny surprised Chris by asking for Miguel's name rather than the number assigned to him. Chris stuttered, "Miguel Rodriguez" and Bonny sighed. At the same time Chris pouted. He had always loved Bonny, but she never noticed.
Bonny flipped her brilliant red hair as Miguel walked into her office. This time, rather than just doing an adjustment, she actually talked to Miguel.
"So, what do you do?"
Miguel's thick Mexican accent almost made Bonny faint, "I play baseball for Indiana University. I hope I can get into the major league."
"I'm sure you'll be able to get into the major league."
"You do not even know me."
Bonny had never had much courage to ask out a man, but this time she managed to swallow all her nervousness and said, "We could fix that. Would you like to go out to dinner tonight?"
Miguel answer, "No, senorita."
Bonny frowned and was ready to finish up the adjustment and not speak another word, but Miguel then spoke again, "I cannot go tonight. There is a baseball game. We could go tomorrow."
Bonny scribbled her cell phone number on one of her many notepads. She slipped it to Miguel as he left the office. She knew that there was no way she could let that man go without her number. She loved his dark skin and long dark hair. His dark brown eyes seemed to pierce her soul. She was not sure that she loved him, but she knew that she wanted to be with him.
That night she found herself at the Indiana University baseball game. Sure enough, Miguel Rodriguze was the star of the team. Bonny was instantly starstruck, even if she was not in love. She would act like she was in love for this man no matter what.
AO had just ended and Bonny realized how much she had been reminiscing about meeting Miguel. It was okay as she had not missed the news.
The news started and there were the normal stories about the upcoming events. Some schools were closed. Bonny only became a bit more interested when she heard that a local man had recently died of a stroke. The odd part about the story was that he had no symptoms until he had the stroke and the doctors tried everything they could, but they were too late. The man had died.
Bonny sighed. "If only these people would learn about how the spine is the center of health, they might not suffer so much. I wish I could help, but I cannot force people to come see me."
There were a few more stories about new technology at the local hospital and a local health fair. This reminded Bonny that she needed to prepare for that health fair, too, which just made her more tired. However, she was waiting for the sports.
She had started to fall asleep in her recliner, but she awoke in time to hear, "And the Chicago Cubs beat the Boston Red Sox today 3 to 1." Bonny actually stood up and cheered. She was surprised that she did this, but then she remembered that she lived alone and could be noisier than she could be when she had lived with others.
When Bonnie met Miguel, he was in his last year at Indiana University. He had started seven years after graduated high school while Bonny went straight through four years of college and five years of chiropractic school without a break. She was happy that Miguel was her elder. Of course, at first, she got many odd looks when she said she was dating a college student. Once Miguel landed the spot with the Chicago Cubs, these odd looks quit. Instead, they turned into stares of jealousy or stares of amazement.
Perhaps it was her bright red hair and white skin in comparison to Miguel's dark skin and black hair. Maybe people really were just incredibly jealous that she got to date him. She did not know what it was, but she developed a stare from her light green eyes that made anybody uncomfortable. Miguel never noticed this stare.
Bonny's cell phone rang out, "Strawberry Fields Forever." Sure enough, Miguel was calling. Bonny smiled and answerd, "Hello, I saw the news! I am so proud of you! You did do a good job, didn't you?"
"Of course I did. The strikes were not from me, but the others."
"Really? You know it is just part of the game, even though no strikes are good."
"Really. Not one single strike."
"Well, then, next time I see you, I guess that means one of those special massages. I know how you like your back to be massaged."
"That will be wonderful, senorita. I can hardly contain my excitement."
"Yes, but you better go with your team, now. Right?"
"You are right, senorita. I must go now. Me amo."
"I love you, too."
Bonny decided she had better get to bed by then. She knew that she had a busy day tomorrow. There were plenty of appointments starting with Mr. 147 and then Mrs. 594. There was no method to Bonny's numbering system, and she loved this. This was she did not know who was who. Random numbers were printed, drawn, and assigned. In fact, she was going to teach Chris this tomorrow. She had tried before, but he never seemed to catch on to such a simple concept. Bonny was also worrying that she may have to fire Chris if he never understood that there was not a real process. However, all of this worry could wait until tomorrow.
She walked into her room and settled in her bed under the thick pink comforter.
