'Bones' Recap: Season 6 Episode 5 'The Bones that Weren't'

Drew Taylor
This episode begins with a painfully saccharin Booth trying to be the perfect boyfriend to Hannah. Their screen time together follows this pattern until Hannah gets shot in the leg while investigating police corruption. Surprisingly, Booth backs off a little at this point, leading Sweets to question why he is working the case instead of staying at the hospital with her.

The Case
A skateboarder trespassing on a construction site hits a speed bump that turns out to be a skull imbedded in concrete. Booth and Brennan arrive to investigate. Somehow, Brennan instantly identifies the remains as belonging to a man in his twenties. A video probe reveals a hollow area inside the concrete and Brennan casually declares that she needs the one-ton slab of concrete shipped to the Jeffersonian.

The team investigates and determines the bones disintegrated due to a fungus. Angela gets another great techie moment and uses a machine to create a plastic replica of the skeleton. It works and they identify the deceased as a dancer, Robert Pearson. Booth and Brennan go to his dance studio and meet the meanest, tiniest, cane-yielding woman in prime time since Carrie Weaver on "E.R."

Although she is a formidable suspect, the investigation leads to a park full of street performers, or buskers as Brennan calls them, including "So You Think You Can Dance" alum Steven 'tWitch' Boss. As a murder suspect, he gets plenty of face time and dialogue in addition to dancing.

Another suspect, an eerily realistic living Shakespeare statue, appears to have a disorder and can communicate only through Shakespeare. Sweets gets to interrogate him because no one else can manage to communicate with him.

The suspects come down to Pearson's partner and the tiny dancer.

Hannah's Health
Brennan looks at Hannah's x-ray and realizes her doctors made a life-threatening misdiagnosis. Her minor fracture has the potential to become an artery-slashing bone shard unless emergency surgery corrects it. Essentially, she saves Hannah's life and the two have a bonding moment as Hannah awkwardly mimics her personality.

Brennan's Tip
As Booth explains his efforts to be a considerate boyfriend include putting the toilet seat down, Brennan tells him it is not enough. Flushing the toilet without closing the lid causes a mist of waste particles to saturate the air. Brennan says, "You might as well brush your teeth in excrement."

"Bones" airs Thursdays at 8 ET on FOX.
