The Bonobo are also known as the Pygmy Chimp. The have longer legs and smaller heads than the regular chimps. Bonobos also walk more erect, almost like a human. Chimps make love for only about 10 minutes while the Bonobo never quits for long! Bonobos live in the Congo region of Africa. They were only distinguished as a separate species in the 1930's, so there is not a whole lot known about them. The females are the dominate sex in their colonies. Males remain attached and protected by their mothers all their lives. The social status of males are dependent on the dominance of their mother. There are only about 120 of these chimps in captivity and there are believed to be less than 10000 in the wild. They are hunted in Africa as, bush meat. Though these are very over-sexed animals, their rate of reproduction is no greater than any other primate. The Bonobo shares 98 percent of the human genetic profile. Though they are nicked named the Pygmy they are far from small weighing between 70 and 100 pounds, the heavier being the males of the species.
