Bonzai Chopper, as Seen on TV, is Not Worth Your Money

Dawn Grubbs
Bonzai is a hand-operated chopper. This item is supposed to chop, dice and mince vegetables and fruits. The Bonzai was advertised all last year on television, and now you can buy it at most retail stores. This item is made by Emerson.

My husband thought I needed some help this year with my cooking so he bought me this little gadget and gave it to me early. I figured that $19.99 was not a bad price if it did what it says it does.

Bonzai comes with ultra sharp stainless steel blades. There are three storage containers, two blades, one fine mince blade and one chopping blade. The storage containers are very nice and come with lids for easy storage. The actual Bosnia is a one piece item. You open the first part and put in the blade. You can open the second section and put in the container to catch the food you chop. Then you put your onion on top of the blade and push down on the top which has a pressure plate. This pushes the onion through the cutter. It takes a lot of strength to cut the onion. You have to be careful where you push down so that you do not brake the lid.

Cleaning: You can lift the cleaning net that is over the pressure side which is very easy. Take off the blade and rinse it out. Then you can just rinse out the rest of the unit. Cleaning is not hard at all. This item is also dishwasher safe as well. I washed it by hand so I can not say how dishwasher safe it is personally.

I do have to say that this item doesn't really do what the television claims it does. I found that I did not have the strength to push down the handle to press the onion through the cutters. I even had my husband try to cut the onion in the press for me as well. He had a very hard time making the onion go through the press. This chopper is nothing more than a press and it you are not strong it will not work for you either. I even tried to press a little, let up and press again. This did not work either. This item is not worth the money I paid for it and it certainly did not make my time in the kitchen easier. The Bonzai chopper did not save me time or money. As a matter of fact it was very frustrating to use.

I hope this review of the Bonzai Chopper helps save someone else some money and time too.

You all need to run out and get the Progressive Onion Chopper at Bed, Bath & Beyond! It's the best thing I have ever purchased for my kitchen. I have 8 siblings and everyone of us has purchased it after trying it at one another's house! And it's cheaper than that crazy Bonzai thing. They're just imitating a good thing!

I bought mine from KMart - I wished I had read your review before buying it. I had the same problem you did. I ended up using my other onion slicer with no problems. I've clean up this unit and will be returning it to KMart! Save your money - this unit is crap.

I have this item in my kitchen and I can tell you that I use it all the time. If you had a hard time using it, it must be because
didn't cut the onion first, you have to cut it in quaters, so as the other vegetables. I think silly you tryed to put hole onion inside.
Hope you get the sense of how to use it.

Thanks for this review. So often I think how great it would be to have some of the items on the infomercials -- most are, I bet, like your chopper!
