BOOK REVIEW: 4 Out of the 5 New York Times Best Sellers for Paperback Fiction
Tribute by Nora Roberts, Where Are You Now? by Mary Higgins Clark, Angels and Demons by Dan Brown, and From Dead to Worse by Charlaine Harris
'Tribute' by Nora Roberts-
When I first picked up this book I opened the front cover and read some of the rave reviews by others. Among these was a warning from "The (Columbia, SC) State" which read as follow: "Warning: Do not begin this book late in the day unless you plan to pull an all-nighter. Because once you start Tribute, you won't want to put it down." I could not agree more. While I am usually a packed-with-action mystery, or sword and dagger fantasy kind of girl; I was slowly sucked into Roberts' use of imagery. From page one you can see the Shenandoah Valley, hear the tools as they rehabilitate the "little farm", and lose yourself in the true-to-life characters of Cilla McGowan and Ford Sawyer. I started Tribute at 1:30 in the afternoon, and by 1:45 i was immersed in the Virginia mountainside. The subtle way Roberts works in the mystery in a real and believable manner is almost breath taking. I would not only recommend that you read it .. I would say it's one book I'd read again!
'Where Are You Now?' by Mary Higgins Clark-
Clark is amazing! I admit normally I can ask my grandmother for a brief synopsis of any of Clark's novels and never have to crack a cover. However, with Where are you now? I was so very glad I broke tradition. I love the way this novel kept me guessing. I pride myself on knowing the end of a story but even I was biting my nails waiting for the end. The true to life technology, and detective work were amazing! You can feel the suspense and the drama throughout the piece. I almost related to Carolyn's desperate need to uncover the truth. If you aren't a Clark fan you will be after reading this book!
'Angels and Demons' by Dan Brown-
This "prequel" to the Da Vinci Code was high up on my must read list. I loved Robert Langdon's character and wondered when we'd be seeing him again. The movie based on this novel is due for release this may. If the movie follows true to the book it should be FANTASTIC! Brown uses the most amazing facts in this story, real locations, real history, and foreseeable technology. Those of you who love conspiracies, murder, and secret societies will love the Illuminati vs Vatican thrill ride of Angels and Demons. I was glad to see Tom Hanks returning as Langdon in the movie. I read the entire 710 pages seeing him in the cryptic hunt. I won't tell you you MUST read it with the movie due out so soon. I will say if the film leaves you wanting more, or you just feel like something is missing; it's worth the $9.99 USD cover price to re-live the adventures of Langdon an Vetra in it's truest form.
'From Dead To Worse', by Charlaine Harris-
This is slowly becoming one of my new favorite series! I love Sookie! OK, that being said. Harris is a genius! The way she can build her own genre and still keep the critics smiling is priceless. Vampire lovers, here is your new series! More fun than Rice and more imaginative. Sookie is a believable and lovable character whom is always up to or into some real danger. Vampires, mystery, action, humor this series let alone this particular volume has it all. If you want to get hooked,(and you will) there are 8 in Harris' Sookie Stackhouse novels. I say read this one first..even if it is out of order.
