Book Review of Ads 'R' Us by Claire Carmichael

Ads 'R' Us is a book set in a modern city in the near future. A city where advertisements and sponsors almost control their modern day life. A young teenager named Barret, was raised in a place called, Simplicity where technology was limited to an extra degree. After the death of his uncle Barret is taken to the big city and must live with his rich and powerful Aunt Kara and Uncle Adrian, and his painful cousin, Taylor.

Problems arise, and soon Barret becomes the guinea pig in a test experiment that was setup by his aunt and uncle. It is to see what the effects of advertising may have on a person without a clue of the modern world. This book proves to be very interesting along the way.

Interested in people's thoughts about the book, I interviewed a couple of my friends to hear what they thought about the book.

Thoughts from Readers:

Noel Lim:

I thought that the books setting, of a future dominated by ads, very futuristic with multiple new forms of communication was ingenious. The new perspective of not just the present world, but a world of technology passed our present. For outsider Barrett, this world instantly overwhelms him and leaves him wondering what would the world be like if he understood it.

For Taylor, her new cousin is a nuisance. She must effectively educate him and teach him the ways of the new world. Her parents try to be supportive, but little does Taylor know that her and her cousin are just guinea pigs being tested for persuasion techniques.

What her Uncle and parents do to their children and nephew in my opinion is inhumane and very wrong. I believe that they are cruel and deserve to be in jail.

Bradley Carney:

I thought the book was good but very confusing because they kept changing the point of view and I found it very hard to keep up on which person was who. I found the setting and the detail in the book really good like and serplicity the detail and descriptions were good and how it came from bartletts point of view was good cause he went from a scene that he knew very well to a place that he was forbidden to go.

For taylor she didn't realy want him to live with them because she thought he would embares her if people saw him with her and I found that her mum wouldn't really listen to taylor at the start of the book.

Peter Theodoropoulos:

I think that this book has been set out really well because it has been set in the future which captures your imagination and makes you keep reading so that you can see what the author thinks that the future will be like.

I think that this book was very interesting and it is one of those books that you can not put down. It is a reasonably easy read but I would definitely recommend it.

I really liked it when Barrett saw tailors computer and phone and didn't know what it was or how to use it because he had never used a computer before.

Luke Turner:

I thought that this book by Claire Carmichael was very exciting and advanced. I say it was advanced because the technology was much more advanced than it is now. The characters were very real, like it is in reality.

If you were an outsider, like Barrett, you would feel nervous, especially coming into a new, you could say, universe, which has no idea they way things are run and what people are like. Taylor is also very real (reality) because she is a very typical teenage girl. She is into popularity and doesn't really care about anyone else but herself and her friends. At the ne of the book Taylor becomes nicer and feels what it is like to be hurt. She learns what Barrett is going through and understands him better.

The setting was very much like I think it would be like in 20 years and stuff, in the city. In Simplicity the setting is strange, with people not using technology helping them to do things more efficiently. I rate this book 7/10. I enjoyed it better but I think it could do with some more action.
