Book Review: "Betrayal" by Fern Michaels

Stephanie Grohol

Betrayal is a book by the New York Times bestselling author, Fern Michaels. Fern Michaels has been an author for over twenty years and has close to one hundred books to have been written. Of course Fern Michaels is her pen name and her real name is Mary Ruth Kuczkir. I have read her off and on over the years and her books are exceptional. Betrayal is one of those books that is a keeper and one that you do not want to put down. Betrayal keeps you interested, riveted, and wanting to know more as you read. It is also a book that makes you wish that you were the main character in the book. It is that good. Betrayal tells the story of two families and what happens when something so outrageous and horrendous happens.

Alex and Kate Rocket are one of the happiest and wealthiest couples that ever lived in Ashville, North Carolina. They have each other, they have the life that they love and they also live in the best place that can be lived in. The only thing that they do not have is a child, but what they don't have they have in each other. They also have the best friendship with a couple and their two girls. They consider the girls to be their surrogate children, even though they belong to someone else. Don and Debbie Winters is the ideal couple, or so everyone assumes they are. Soon, something so horrible and so horrendous will happen that every life will be changed.

In an instant, everyone's life will be altered. The girls, Emily and Sara, spend a few weeks with the Rocket's while their parents go on a cruise. This has happened for many years and everyone seems to be happy with the arrangements. However the girls are now getting much older and times with them will soon change. Emily is fifteen years old while Sara is twelve. Their time does not according to plan however. Kate's pottery room is in ruins and Sara seems to suck all the air out of a room. Emily and Sara constantly battle with Sara acting like a little brat. Soon the two weeks are up and the girls head home and life goes back to normal.

Or so they think. Alex gets a shocking call from Don Winters and is shocked to find out that Sara has confessed to being molested by Alex himself. Alex is so shocked by these allegations, as is Kate. Alex is one of the good guys and would never do anything like that. He has a clean reputation. Alex is taken to Florida to be put in jail and a trial to be announced. Kate is determined to clear his name and hires what she thinks is a very good reputable lawyer. She also wants the Winters' family to pay for what they have done. Unfortunately for them, things do not go the way that they want and Alex is found guilty of the crimes. Kate is horrified by it all and is determined to clear Alex's name. She finds another lawyer and he makes many discoveries about the former lawyer and other things. Just as they are able to get Alex another trial, life happens and Kate loses the one person that she has loved the most.

It will take a number of years and many things for Kate to get through in order for Kate to exact her revenge on the Winters family. And what revenge she gets. She manages to disappear as she plots and plans her revenge. Once she is ready, she will make the Winters pay for what they have done. She will ruin them financially in every way possible. They will get what is coming to them. Then Kate discovers something magical in all of the dealings. She will find love again and also find out a secret that was kept by Alex and Debbie. In the end, what she has wrought will come to fruition and she will begin her life again.

This book was so moving and so interesting to say the least. I had a patron at the library where I work praise this book and let me know in no uncertain terms that I just had to read this book. So I was able to get this book and she was indeed right. It was a book that you cannot put down. The way that Fern Michaels told the story was riveting and intriguing. I wanted to be Kate and go after that family. I wanted to go after Debbie and Sara so bad and for them to get what was coming. I enjoyed the book immensely and plan on reading her books again in the near future.
