Book Review; Coffeehouse Angel

A Young Adult Novel by Suzanne Selfors

Sharon Schmidt Tyler
The title and cover Coffeehouse Angel caught my eye in the library as it passed my cart in the library where I work. Despite my already towering piles of books to read and my significant list of books on hold I added this to my pile, and am extremely glad I did. I enjoyed the writing style and the story itself. The main character was relatable and compelling. This is a great light teen romance with just a sprinkle of bigger themes that are seamlessly intertwined.

Coffeehouse Angel tells the story of Katrina as she searches for her talent, what she wants and what is best for the people in her life. Katrina is being raised by her grandmother, who owns an old-fashioned coffee shop where Katrina spends the majority of her free time working. The regulars and other employee are as much family as her grandmother. Katrina is sweet and good hearted, which is what have brought about her downfall. One morning she leaves coffee and some food for a stranger in the alley and her life will never be the same.

I think that Katrina is a likable character that has insecurities and flaws like any teenage girl. She is looking for her place in the big picture and what her future might hold for her. She faces the typical self-doubts, but it does not come across as whining or overwhelming the story. There is a light paranormal element, but if you do not normally read, paranormal novels do not let that stop you. Although the book is generally a light, sweet teen romance it dos deal with bigger themes such as trust and forgiveness.

I highly recommend this novel for anyone that enjoys young adult novels, light chick lit, coming of age stories, or light paranormal romance. The book is clean, with the most physical contact ever seen within it being a kiss. I think anyone age thirteen or older would enjoy the book. I am very glad that I read this book.
