This book contains three sections: The Old Testament, The New Testament and the Reference Section. It is a guide to the Bible with beautiful illustrations and detailed explanations. The book begins with a discussion about the Pentateuch. It starts by describing the contents of the Pentateuch. Then the book covers numerous points including the authorship of the Pentateuch, the sources of the Pentateuch and theories about how the Pentateuch was built up. In addition to this type of analysis, the book also discusses archaeological remains.
In the Old Testament, the book covers the Pentateuch, the Historical Books, The Wisdom Books, The Prophets, and the Apocrypha. In the New Testament, the book covers the Life of Jesus, the Beginning of Christianity and The Letters. In the reference section, the book covers People and Places in the Bible as well as a Glossary and a Bibliography.
The book also covers the Eschatology meaning the end of the world. It covers it in the Hebrew Bible, the Prophets, and the New Testament. It covers the plants, birds, animals, musical instruments and imagery in the Bible. It covers marriage and family in ancient Israel. It covers the concept of time in the Bible.
In the New Testament, the book covers Jerusalem during the time of Herod and Jesus, Procurators, Kings, Judaism and everyday Jewish life. It covers the construction of the Temple and references the Mishnah. It covers the different Jewish groups that existed. It covers the Dead Sea Scrolls and the Jewish war. It covers the Synoptic Gospels and details the differences and similarities between them. In essence, the book covers the history, the cultures and the biblical events in the world.
John Bowker, the author of this book, wrote many books on religion. I find this book very helpful because of the wide range of topics it covers and because of the numerous explanations it gives. This book is an excellent companion for any student of the Bible.
