Book Review of "Darkfever" by Karen Marie Moning

Genie Walker

In my article "My Favorite Book Opening Lines" "Darkfever" by Karen Marie Moning was the first book I mentioned. The first two sentences of "Darkfever" are enough to make your eyebrows climb up to your hairline. "My philosophy is pretty simple - any day nobody's trying to kill me is a good day in my book. I haven't had many good days lately." Now, how can that not be attention grabbing? Especially when on the spine, it claims this book is a romance novel. As it turns out this book itself is the first in the Fever series and it isn't a romance book, but according to what Karen Marie Moning has written on her website that series itself is a romance. This book is full of suspenseful twists and turns and oh yeah it has Fairies in it. These are not the sweet Fairies from the stories I read as a child, no these are Fae who are deceiveful and are okay with hurting humans; the more the better. I just love a well written paranormal novel.

The main character is MacKayla "Mac" Lane, a 22 year old southern girl from Ashford, Georgia with no more on her mind than getting a good tan and enjoying her time alone while her parents are island hopping and her sister is studying in Ireland. Mac on the surface looks and acts like a blonde bimbo with very little substance, but keep in mind that looks can be deceiving.

Mac's life changes when her sister, Alina, is murdered in Ireland and it seems that no one is going to do anything about it. The Irish police called and let the family know that they had decided to send Alina's case the unsolved division. She had waited three weeks for someone to get busy and solve her sister's murder. When that didn't happen she switched gears from grief stricken younger sister to butt kicking sister with revenge on her mind.

Mac goes to Ireland despite her parent's disapproval to find out what happened to Alina. Once Mac gets to Ireland her whole life is turned upside down again. It turns out that she is a sidhe-seer, which is someone who can see the true nature of the Fae and are not fooled by Fae glamour or magic, but she can be hurt by them. Alina left a voice mail message on Mac's cell phone telling her to find the Sinsar Dubh and that a man who she thought loved her was one of them and out to get her. Alina didn't tell her what "one of them" was nor did she tell her how to find the Sinsar Dubh or her boyfriend's name.

If you think I'm doing a spoiler, let me tell you that what I've mentioned, so far is on the first 17 pages. So now you know it is a fast action paranormal romance suspense novel with no romance involved. I didn't tell you I like the way Mac thinks. Her thought processes are at times hilariously funny.

Bottom line: Run to the store or library and get this book, it is well written and a fun read.
