The book begins with Hannah and Matt along with Tanner and Jade out having a get together with their kids. Jade hasn't been feeling so well lately, but she really feels that it's nothing to be alarmed about. She's been having some terrible headaches lately, and an overall feeling of not being well. Jade lost a baby in miscarriage the past year, and it might be that she is simply feeling depressed. As the story travels along, she discovers that she is pregnant again, and she and Tanner are as happy as can be along with their son Ty. Their happiness however, is short lived. Jade went in to take a shower one morning with an excruciating headache and fell to the floor. Tanner called the paramedics and she was rushed to the hospital immediately. What they found was not good news. The doctor suggested that she terminate her pregnancy so they could go ahead with their treatment plans, but Jade couldn't do that no matter what the status of her health was.
Hannah and Matt are looking to adopt. Hannah has a teen aged daughter Jenny, and as time goes along, she has really been wanting more children. They register as foster parents and a little girl Grace comes along that is four years old. Grace has been living in squalor with her prostitute mother, so the child is in a dangerous situation all of the time. Grace is found by social services and placed into foster care when her mother goes to jail. Her parental rights may be severed. When the social worker calls Hannah and tells her about Grace, and asks her about Grace living with them for awhile, Hannah isn't sure. She has been warned that it may not be forever, and that an adoption plan may not work out. Hannah would hate to fall in love with a child and then have the child taken away. But, reluctantly, she agrees. As soon as she meets Grace, the whole family falls in love. Jenny is tickled pink to have a new little sister, and Matt and Hannah, a daughter. There is an adjustment period for little Grace, but she comes around pretty quickly and that whole family treasures her. What will they do if Grace gets taken away?
