Book Review: When the Heart Cries

Book One in the Sisters of the Quilt Series

Lynda Altman
When the Heart Cries by Cindy Woodsmall, is a book that pulls at your heart strings. The main character, Hannah Lapp, is a seventeen year-old Amish girl. She is in love with a Mennonite boy. On the day of their engagement, tragedy strikes, changing the course of Hannah's life forever.

Reality hits Hannah Lapp hard as an unwelcome event changes her life forever. As she tries to cope, Hannah faces losing her place in the community, with her family and even with the man she is engaged to.

My thoughts

As I started to read this book, I thought that it was going to be the typical girl meets boy, girl loses boy, girl gets her boyfriend back. The plot unfolded and it became quite clear that this was not the typical story line. Cindy Woodsmall did a wonderful job creating interesting twists and turns to the plot. Although it is fiction, this book is believable. You can picture Hannah in her community, facing all that life has thrown at her. Normally, I do not shed tears while reading, but this book is a rare exception. I cannot wait to read the remaining two books in this series.

Suitable for teens and adults

I enjoyed this book tremendously. It is suitable for late teens and adults. Some of the events in the book may not be suitable for younger teens. Parents may want to screen the book before allowing their children to read it.

This book is well suited for book clubs. I find the characters have enough depth and complexity to warrant exciting discussions. High school book clubs and homeschool reading groups will find this book a perfect addition to their reading lists. The author has included a glossary, allowing students to look-up unfamiliar, Pennsylvania Dutch phrases.

I recommend this book. Cindy Woodsmall did an excellent job of creating characters that the reader can easily relate to. The book is short but entertaining and it leaves you with a sense of wanting more. Woodsmall masterfully sets the stage for the remaining books in the Sisters of the Quilt series.

Thanks Freida. This was the first book by Cindy Woodsmall that I have read. I look forward to reading the other 2 books in the series.
