I went into this book with heavy skepticism as I often do with NY Times Bestselling author books (after all, there are more times than not that I will read a book and wonder "how on earth did this hit a bestselling list?"). The Hunger Games however did not disappoint!
In the beginning, I was a little taken back by the first person, present tense verbiage. It came off as a bit odd. But once I settled in and got used to the flow, it read natural.
The storyline is amazingly creative and hooked my attention almost immediately'"in a post apocalyptic type of North America there is The Hunger Games. A sadistic event where chosen children, ages 12-18 are stripped away from their families and placed into an arena where they must fight to the death. Katniss, our main female character is sent off to the "games" where she must strive to win at all costs'"or die a more than likely painful death. In the course she connects with Peeta, a teenage boy from the district where she calls home. Things heat up as sparks begin to show between the pair. In the games, only 1 victor may stand -- what a sticky situation for our two lovers.
I found myself longing to make time to read this book and couldn't get enough. As the am hours rolled in I was so disappointed when I knew that I had to put the book down and sleep. Collins does an amazing job of bringing you into her world and putting you right in the shoes of Katniss. You can feel the pressure rising throughout the games'"it's a nail biter that had me on the edge of my seat until the very end. I literally felt joy, fear, sorrow, and anger throughout the story. Kudos to Collins for an absolutely AMAZING story. I cannot wait to read the sequel.
