John Grogan and his wife Jenny decide that it is time to start a family. Instead of having a child right away, they purchase a mischievous Golden Lab who they name Marley. Marley is afraid of storms, eats out of the trash can, chews on furniture, and even swallows fine jewelry. To say the least, he is quite a handful.
After having Marley for a while, Jenny becomes pregnant and is delighted! Marley instantly becomes a protector and friend to the entire family. He even helps out by eating an occasional dirty diaper!
John and Marley have a special connection that only a dog owner and his dog can understand. Whether John was working on his newspaper columns or going to the refrigerator for a snack, Marley was always at his side. They share a true companionship. Just reading about it made me appreciate the quirkiness of my dog even more.
I laughed so many times when reading this book because I too have a Marley, only her name is Ebony. She eats my couch pillows, my comforter, attacks dryer sheets, and for some reason she can not get it through her tiny head that frogs, mice, birds, and other small creatures you might find in your back yard, just do not want to play with her!
Anyone who has a frisky little puppy or old lazy hound should read this book by John Grogan. I highly recommend this light hearted novel and hope that other readers will share in the emotions brought on by Marley, the World's Worst Dog!
