Book Review: In the Shadow of Swords by Val Gunn

Skyler Raine
Rating 3 ½ out of 5

Val Gunn creates a rich blend of deception, murder, and revenge in this thrilling tale.

The story takes off in high-gear with fierce action, leading into the murder of a very powerful and renowned man. Plagued by his own demons, the assassin, Ciris Sarn, leaves on his own quest. He moves forth, unknowing that his latest victim was husband to Marin Altair-a woman not to be trifled with. Marin is a strong and skilled hunter, bent on seeking revenge for what has become of her one true love.

Meanwhile, Sarn also crosses paths with past threats who desire nothing more than to have his head placed upon a stake. Without giving away spoilers, Sarn will soon discover that there is much more conspiring that meets the eye. Pages containing great power have been revealed into existence and the wheels begin to turn as a race begins to obtain them at all costs.

The Shadow of Swords was filled with emotion and thrilling turns. Val Gunn showcases great literary skills in this novel and paints a visual world of corruption before your eyes. This story is a great read, however may intimidate some readers with its fast introductory pace and many characters. The story begins with a bang and takes off rapidly to where at times it may be a bit difficult to absorb what is happening before the story shifts. It is told throughout from multiple character perspectives which all intertwine within the main plot. At times it may feel like an overload to take in while trying to get a strong feel for each character. That being said, Gunn makes up for this by his rich writing and intriguing storyline.

I felt an instant connection with Marin and loved her strong, determined willpower. Sarn is a character you'll find yourself in a torn love/hate relationship with. You'll turn pages, hoping for his demise one moment, and the next rooting for his escape.

Overall I enjoyed this read and would recommend it to fantasy-lovers seeking something a bit different with an Islamic/Arabian setting. You might find yourself pleasantly surprised by giving In the Shadow of Swords a chance!
