Book Review: The Wide Awake Princess by E.D. Baker

Sleeping Beauty's Little Sister Saves the Day

Sharon Schmidt Tyler
The Wide Awake Princess by E.D. Baker is a charming book for children, around nine and older. The story is that of Sleeping Beauty's younger sister who goes on a quest to wake everyone from the magical sleep. Annie is immune to magic, and the curse that puts her family and kingdom to sleep. She goes out on her own to find her sister's true love that will be able to break the spell.

Everyone knows the story of Sleeping Beauty. However, Baker offers readers a new perspective to the classic story. In The Wide Awake Princess, we get to see what really happened while everyone else was sleeping. Annie is a smart and capable princess, having conquered all the skills her perfect older sister had no interest in learning. She sets out on her own to find the prince that should be able to wake her sister up with a kiss, and brings some extra back just in case. Annie is joined by a castle guard that helps her along the way. She also meets several characters from other well known, and some not so well known, stories.

The Wide Awake Princess is charming, funny and quirky. There are fun twists to classic tales and the mystery aspect of how the spindle and her well-protected sister came together. There are elements of romance, adventure, mystery and coming of age stories all wrapped up in this fun read. I now feel the distinct need to read the other books by Baker, which all seem to be well loved by other readers.
