Book Review of Yes I Can! Yes You Can!
The Story of Jay Leeuwenburg, a Successful Athlete with Diabetes
This book is the inspirational story of Jay Leeuwenburg. At the very young age of 12 he was diagnosed with Type I Diabetes. From that very moment his outlook on life was a positive one, he told himself "Yes I Can!". He set out to prove that athletes with diabetes can achieve greatness.
This book is about the entertaining and touching stories of Jay Leeuwenburg's life as a diabetic and how he tackled the disease on his path to a successful career in the NFL. It delivers a motivating message that this disease can be managed. Anyone with diabetes, as well as their family members and friends, should buy this book.
Jay, blessed with a combination of competitiveness, intelligence, confidence and athletic ability, quickly accepted responsibility for managing his disease. He tested the boundaries imposed on athletes with diabetes and pushed ahead with every imaginable athletic and competitive interest. Almost losing a foot to an infection in high school, he persevered to become an all-state athlete. In college he played in four bowl games and two national championship games during his career, and was team captain his senior season. In the NFL he played against Lawrence Taylor and Reggie White and helped his team into the playoffs.
He accomplished all this without the support and power of a mentor or role model of another diabetic athlete. The absence of diabetic athletes bothered him and Jay decided to become a role model for other diabetics, especially children. He and his wife Ingher educate youngsters with diabetes and motivate them to take responsibility for controlling their disease and living a full life. His message: "Yes You Can!!" is equally applicable to everyone dealing with diabetes, regardless of age.
