Encouraging Boys to Read

lynxathome
Getting boys interested in reading as the girls are ,can be a challenge, but with the right motivations and the right books, your son can become an avid reader like our 8 year old son, Charles! The following are all series books based on recommendations from my 8 year old son.

"Captain Underpants" series by Dav Pilkey
Boys find the adventures of Captain Underpants (a pudgy little comic superhero who runs around in white underwear and a red cape) to be hilarious! With titles like "Big, Bad Battle of the Bionic Booger Boy" and "Super Diaper Baby" and the side splitting humor used in these books, boys love them! Moms are mostly grossed out by the books, with words like "barf", but boys and often their dads love these books. Charles' comments "The action is what I liked best"

"Magic Tree House" series by Mary Pope Osborne.
Always a new adventure to be read. One of the most appealing things is places you go--like back in time, a distant land, to the moon and even the future, Jack and his little sister, Annie, the main characters in the books, make learning about history fun. Charles' comments "The 'past' part, it tells stories about the past, is what I like best".

"A to Z mysteries" is a series by Ron Roy
The characters Dink, and his buddies Josh and Ruth Rose, are young detectives who are solving mysteries from A to Z. The books are not only a fun read but teaches the kids about solving problems. What Charles had to say "It has mysteries that are fun".

"Ready Freddy" books are by Abby Klein
A fun read about the misadventures of a little boy Freddy and his friends. Charles' comments "It is funny".

"The Fudge Books" by Judy Blume
Peter Hatcher has allot trouble mostly caused by his brother, Farley Drexel Hatcher, AKA Fudge, from eating his pet turtle to wanting to marry one of Peter's worst enemies. Charles says "it's weird, but funny".

"Nate the Great" by Marjorie Sharmat
Nate and his sidekick dog Sludge are elementary school sleuths ready to solve the next mystery. Charles says "good mysteries".

"Amelia Bedelia" by Peggy Parish and Herman Parish
A zany housekeeper whose strange way of thinking and takes things too literally leads to lots of strange adventures. Charles' comments "She is weird and it is funny"

There are many more adventure serious out there waiting to be read! Check your local library for lots more!

I am so happy that my grandson has learned so quickly to have the love of reading. I have worked with students for years in the AR reading program. Letting students pick books that intrest them helps them enjoy what they read. I would sometime let a student read a book above his level to see if he could do it. That would help him to decide where he needed to be at that time. Children have gotten back to reading more than they have in a long time. It makes me happy because there is so much out there to learn.
