Books that Introduce Peace to Children

Nicki Mann
In hectic times such as now, it is more important than ever that adults work on raising children who want, and appreciate, peace. But how do you introduce the concept of peace to a young child? Many adults would rather not frighten children by talking to them about wars, or confuse them by talking about animosity between people of different races, religions and ethnic backgrounds. But there are books that can help introduce the idea of peace in a way that is, well, peaceful! Here are three of my favorites.

The Peace Book

by Todd Parr.

One of my favorite children's authors has created a book to teach children about peace. Todd Parr illustrates his books with bright drawings of different-colored people (including green, purple and orange) just being themselves. In this book, children learn that peace can be a personal feeling, such as the feeling they have when they think about someone they love; and that peace also comes from taking care of the earth, being tolerant of others' differences and having an open mind, being kind to others, and sharing with people who have less than you. Most importantly, according to Parr, peace is "being who you are." Even if who you are is someone with bright pink hair, yellow eyes, and a blue face!

What Does Peace Feel Like?

By V. Radunsky.

The children of the Ambrit International School in Rome helped to create this book. The children were asked questions such as "What does peace smell like?" (Fresh and new furniture, the wind that comes into your room while you are sleeping, pizza) and "What does peace sound like?" (A silent day, raindrops falling, children on their birthdays). Vladimir Radunsky, illustrator of many other children's books, has illustrated this one with bright, childlike drawings. This is a nice book to help children understand what peace is! Parents and teachers who share this book with children can also easily use it as part of a larger project, and have children create their own books about what peace looks, feels, smells, and sounds like.

Can You Say Peace?

By Karen Katz.

This book was created to celebrate International Day of Peace. The book begins by explaining that all around the world, children are wishing for peace. It then goes on to introduce children who live in various countries, and how to say "peace" in different languages. The book helps to show children that everyone is alike, no matter where they live.

Books can be a fun, and easy, way to introduce a new concept to a child. The three books I have mentioned here are great ones to start out with, when teaching children about the concept of peace!
