Do you have a child with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD)? I'm sure it can be frustrating at times to have your child not listen to you and to be experiencing difficulties in school. I'm sure you may also feel helpless other times. These books are great resources to help you help your child who suffers with ADHD, and I encourage you to check them out.

Parenting Kids With ADD/ADHD: Real Tools for Real Life: Parenting Kids With ADD/ADHD by Al Winebarger is a great book for parents who need help with their kids who suffer from ADHD. Dr. Winebarger is a psychologist and has developed and implemented a two-week long day program for kids and their families with ADHD. His book teaches parents how to utilize the same tools he uses in his day program to best help kids suffering from ADHD.

This book covers several aspects of ADHD, and gives parents a variety of helpful hints and tools to use in behavior management, setting limits, communication, organization, and stress management. Some of the specific topics the book covers include what ADHD is, how parents can use clear requests to promote behavior changes in their kids, how to effectively encourage your child, ways parents can recognize, avoid, and cope with stress, how to use a point chart with your child, how to set clear rules, how to effectively utilize time-out, how to help your child make and maintain friendships, and much more.

The ADHD Workbook for Parents: The ADHD Workbook for Parents by Harvey C. Parker is another great book, providing parents tools and strategies to help them aid their children suffering from ADHD. Dr. Parker is a psychologist and the former executive director of Children and Adults with ADHD.

In this book, he explains what ADHD is, problems that can occur with ADHD, how to get a good assessment for your child, and the causes of ADHD. He also teaches parents strategies for managing behavior in their children, how to handle homework issues, how to help your child succeed in school, and teaching your child effective strategies for studying. He incorporates workbook sheets and exercises to help parents implement the tools and techniques taught in this book more effectively.

This book is useful for parents of children between the ages of 2-12 suffering with the condition. You can purchase this book from Amazon.com or from your local bookstore.

Teenagers With ADD/ADHD: A guide for Parents and Professionals: Teenagers With ADD/ADHD is a book specifically designed for parents with teens struggling with ADHD. The teen years are already difficult, but can be even more difficult for a teen suffering with this condition.

The book teaches parents how to help their teens succeed at school, work at home with their teens, help parents decide if medication is right for their teen, and helps parents and teens decide what to do after high school.

ADHD: A Survival Guide for Parents and Teachers: ADHD: A Survival Guide for Parents and Teachers by Richard A. Lougy and David K. Rosenthal offers an in-depth look at common ADHD behaviors and helps parents and teachers learn effective strategies for working with children who suffer with ADHD.

This book takes a very close look at what ADHD is, how it manifests itself, the role of environmental and biological factors in ADHD, developmental stages of ADHD, and more. The book also discusses medication for ADHD, stress management for parents, ADHD behaviors, what's normal and atypical for children suffering from ADHD, time management techniques, how to plan and handle family outings, how to communicate with your child effectively, how you can more easily help your child get ready for school and bed, and dealing with school issues.

This book seems to be a lot more in depth than many other books out there for parents dealing with ADHD children. You can order it from Amazon.com or from your local bookstore.

The Attention Zone: A Parent's Guide to Attention Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder: The Attention Zone by Michael Cohen is another book that will help parents raise children who suffer from ADHD. Not only does the book offer advice and information, it also encourages parents to allow their kids to take part in their ADHD treatment. Some of the topics covered in this book include what ADHD is, the symptoms of ADHD, conditions that might co-occur with ADHD, how the condition impacts families, how to involve the child in his or her own treatment, adolescent issues, behavior management advice for the home, school issues, and treatment options, including psychological and medical treatment options for ADHD.

The ADHD Book: Answers to Parents' Most Pressing Questions: The ADHD Book by Beth Ann Hill and Dr. James Van Haren answers parents' questions about ADHD in a unique question-and-answer format, which makes the book ideal for skimming and learning answers to specific questions or for reading cover-to-cover. This book discusses the symptoms, causes, and treatment of ADHD as well as how ADHD impacts families and friends, how to teach children with ADHD coping skills, how to teach children with ADHD social skills, how to handle school issues, and day-today issues with children suffering from ADHD, such as how to handle homework, what to do if a child is too rough with pets or siblings, and teenage issues.

The authors of this book provide unique experiences to parents who decide to read it. Beth Ann Hill is not only an educator to children with ADHD, she is also a parent of a child with the condition. Dr. James Van Halen is a pediatric specialist who works with children with ADHD.

ADD/ADHD: A Parent's Practical Guide to Attention Deficit Disorders: ADD/ADHD: A Parent's Practical Guide to Attention Deficit Disorders by Marie Annette Isom offers practical advice for parents who have children suffering from ADHD. Isom utilizes her own experiences as a parent with a child who has ADHD to offer parents advice and strategies for coping. Her book discusses the difference between ADD and ADHD, when you should seek professional help for your child, a parent/teacher checklist, important school issues, such as the difference between IEP and 504, things to consider in deciding whether to medicate your child or not, alternative approaches to ADHD, such as massage, biofeedback, and acupressure, and time management tips. She also includes blank charts parents can utilize. This is the only book I've seen on the market that dedicates a significant portion to discussing alternative treatments for ADHD.

From Chaos to Calm: Effective Parenting for Challenging Children With ADHD and Other Behavior Problems: From Chaos to Calm is a unique book for parents with ADHD children because it gives the perspective of a parent, a child, and a therapist. This book teaches parents how to discipline their children effectively and consistently, how to deal with behaviors, such as forgetting, overreacting, and stalling, how to handle getting ready for school, going to bed, and other daily routines, working with your child's teacher, and more.

Parenting can be a challenge when you have a child with special needs. These books should offer you the information and advice you need to make your job easier and to help your child become a success.
