You probably don't even want to hear the word books when thinking about college. After all, textbooks are the great financial back breaker that always ends up costing far more than you expected. Still, in addition to textbooks, there are still a few must-have books for the college dorm room.

Dictionary: College students are likely to encounter a whole class of new and interesting words. They will want to look them up to keep from looking silly. A really enterprising student will want to learn a new word or two every day.

Thesaurus: Thesauruses are invaluable when writing. It helps to avoid word repetition and brings a person's writing up to the next level.

Writing Guide: No matter how many term papers a student writes, citations an formatting can be tricky. Having a handy-dandy guide at arms length will be very helpful. Be sure to get a writing guide made specifically for writing college papers. Make sure your guide or guides give detailed information on citing sources and on writing style.

Digital Encyclopedia: You don't want to bring an entire volume of encyclopedias to college as that would just be silly. But for times when you need to make sense out of something in a textbook, or something the college professor said, looking it up from source you can trust will be very helpful.

Do not bring: Don't bring any novel you have already read unless it is on the syllabus for the coming school year. Don't bring any books you want to read either. Save it for winter break. Don't bring your yearbook or a pile of photo albums either. You really don't have space for something you will only look at once a month at most.

Book Reader: In all honestly, your college student doesn't need a single book, in it's traditional form. A Kindle, Kindle reader application, or other book reader is all you will ever need to hold enough reference books to fill an entire library. In addition, a fair number of textbooks can also be delivered by way of book reader for a discounted price.
