How Not to Be an Online Wallflower

Where Do You Start?

Make your dating profile interesting, as it's the thing someone searching will read about you. If your profile isn't interesting, the odds of you getting a response or being added to someone's list are slim. So take the time to build a profile to capture the reader's interest.

Make Your Profile ID Memorable When you register on the dating site, it's important to have a memorable nickname. Your nickname can serve as a clue to your personality and interests. For example, if you love dancing, "DancingGal". Or if you're a guy who likes running races, then "MarathonMan" might make your name easy to remember. Humor is always a good idea and gives people an idea of your personality. But it's not a good idea to sound desperate like "Waiting4Husband" or "Lonely2Night". That can make you less appealing and a turnoff for others looking to find connections.

Headlines Grab Their Attention

Headlines are the hook for your dating ad. Make it interesting so others will want to read more. Introduce yourself in a way to make others want to know more. Writing, "My name is Leslie, I am 50 years old and live in Des Moines." Unless someone is looking for someone in Des Moines, the reader will probably move on. What is the image you want people to have of you? If you're stuck for inspiration, take a line from a favorite song or movie. The line can give the reader a connection particularly if they share the favorite. Don't apologize for using personal ads to meet people. Skip the "I don't usually do this," line. Be confident, you can meet lots of interesting and fun people online. Remember you want to stand out not stick out.

Choose A Good Picture Of Yourself

Get a good picture of yourself. You don't have to pay for a photographer. Digital cameras work well. Just make sure the photo is clear. Look happy and smile. People want to connect with others who look like they would be fun to talk to and connect with. If you don't include a photo people will wonder what you're hiding. You want someone to connect with you, so include the photo.

The holidays are a great time to get some photos. You're generally relaxed and dressed in clothes you like. Get some friends to snap some shots of you. Make the photos solo shots-just you. You're not signing up for group dates. You may want to add some action shots like dancing, karate or doing other hobbies. One bonus of you caught in an action shot-you look relaxed and happy. People viewing your photo will be able to get a glimpse of the real you. The clothes to wear? Choose an outfit you like and look good in. You don't need to get the airbrushed glamour shot look. That is unless you look like that 24/7. Then go for it! Skip the overly sexy clothes as well, unless you're looking for a sexual relationship from the start. It's a choice you make.

Finally spell and grammar check the ad. You don't want to turn off a possible friend or date, because you were too lazy to bother. Online dating can be fun and a great way of meeting new people. Your profile is the way people will get a quick view of who you are. Have fun writing your profile and you'll meet lots of new people. And you won't have to worry about being an online wallflower
