Boomers - Drink Your Vegetables With a Glass of V-8

A Boomer Heart-Healthy Drink

A Brewster Smythe
Boomers have learned to live fast and loose. Even though, we are getting older and looking over the fence at social security. We still like to do things in an efficient and contained way. We always look for the quickest, surest route to changing the world, and our own lives.

That's why when it comes to our health, Baby boomers are seeking out the fastest ways to keep their weight down, exercise, and eat healthy. However, most of us have learned that at the end of it, the road to good health is approached through good eating and consistent exercise.

Lucky, for us, a man named W. G. Peacock invented V-8 vegetable juice in 1933. His idea to completely blend all the juices together and taking the advice of an area grocer to shorten the name to V-8 turned into a success story. Campbell's Soup bought V-8 in 1948 and it has been a staple of American life since.

Since February is National Heart Month, the American Heart Association has stepped up to the base and promoted Go Red events throughout the country. What better time to start to incorporate one of the best Boomer drinks around into a daily diet?

Who can forget the wistful daughter of Kevin Costner's girlfriend in "For Love of the Game" asking him why all single men love V-8? "My dad thinks if he gets a glass of V-8 into me I will have had..." An embarrassed Costner sips a V-8 and states "Nutritious" thus quieting the 14 year old and giving a great plug to the vegetable drink of stars.

Here are facts that have helped make V-8 the drink of the over 50 set:

A glass of V-8 contains lycopene- four full tomatoes worth V-8 is now certified by The American Heart Association.

Each glass contains zero grams of fat.

Relatively low in calories.

Most Boomers, though, are cynical when told that foods are a "miracle" cure, or can take care of all the health problems they face. They want sound science. That's there with V-8. Granted, it isn't all a boomer needs, but it can help along the way. Most boomers have childhood auditory memories of their mothers encouraging them to "eat their vegetables". Probably, most of us have neglected those memories throughout the years. Now, though, we have to pay attention to what mom said.

Dr. Beth Abramson, a foundation spokesperson for the The Heart and Stroke Foundation of Canada recently stated, "The tidal wave of Canadian baby boomers could be the first generation to turn back the clock and experience a serious decline in the quality of life." This statement appeared on February 16, 2007 at CBS-Canada online. So, boomers are looking at current scientific thinking.

Boomers are well aware of the facts, they are intelligent consumers. Now, all they have to do is "drink their vegetables.
