10 years ago, the original Boondock Saints made a splash on video, as poor reviews and low box office ultimately mattered little. Troy Duffy is hoping for the same winning formula in his long awaited sequel, as the vigilante MacManus brothers come out of hiding in Ireland to take down Boston's new criminal underworld.
After 10 years of quoting the original, and 10 years of seeing Troy Duffy turn himself into a Hollywood cautionary tale, Boondock Saints fans finally get to see something new. With the release date finally here, what remains of the original's cult audience will flock to theaters - at least those that have the movie.
But the film's true success is probably still to come on DVD, like it was with the original. That may be the best place to see it, since only 65 theaters have Boondock Saints 2 in theaters today, mostly in New York and LA. Boondock Saints 2 reviews likely won't help get it a nationwide release, like with Paranormal Activity this month.
In any case, Boondock Saints 2 reviews stand to be meaningless, like they were for the original. Most reviews are only coming in today, and most aren't that positive. Naturally, many a Boondock Saints 2 review trashes Troy Duffy, and his attempts to ape Quentin Tarantino. Duffy was supposed to be the next Tarantino 10 years ago, but his sequel comes out at a time when Tarantino rip-offs have finally gone out of style.
The Boondock Saints 2 reviews certainly hint that nothing has changed, as those that loved the style of the original are sure to like this one. The exact same formula is in place, with the exact same fire fights, and the exact same cheering for vigilantism. But the film may be a little late to that party, as it is merely the second ultra-violent vigilante film of the month, after Law Abiding Citizen. However, Gerard Butler still has a way to go to match the MacManus's body count.
Rotten Tomatoes has only 15 Boondock Saints 2 reviews thus far, with only three of them positive. The average rating is only 3.5 out of 10, though that is from critics, not fans.
