Boordy Winery: A Baltimore Area Fun Sunday Date

Baltimore Area Winery Serves Wine, Food, and Music on Sunday Afternoons

Opher Ganel
Just minutes north of Baltimore, Boordy offers fun Sunday afternoon events each spring, for a perfect date or fun outing with a group of friends. Enjoy Boordy's "Stew... in Our Juices" on March Sundays. April Sundays bring "Red, Whites, and Bluegrass." Both combine food, Boordy wines, and live music, in the relaxed atmosphere of a day off on a charming 19th century Baltimore County farm.

Boordy's "Stew... in Our Juices" offers unlimited beef stew, chicken pot pie stew, and vegetable ratatouille, made with Boordy wines. "Reds, Whites, and Bluegrass" consists of BBQ meats, salads and Boordy wines. The upper level of Boordy's 19th century barn provides a rustic setting for a great Sunday picnic date, rain or shine, minutes from Baltimore's bustle.

A relaxed Sunday afternoon cheese and wine picnic just outside Baltimore

On a recent March Sunday we drove past Baltimore to Boordy Vineyards. Boordy lets visitors bring in picnic baskets, which is exactly what we did. Our basket included several cheeses - cave-aged Kaltbach Swiss, Dubliner Irish cheddar, and a goat cheese. Baguettes, an olive tapenade, and avocados rounded off our picnic.

The $12 per person tickets include wine tasting consisting of 1 oz samples of Boordy's wide variety of wines. When you find a favorite wine, 1 oz samples are not enough. We bought a chilled bottle of Boordy's "Rockfish," a fruity dry Seyval-Vidal-Chardonnay blend, and a bottle of Boordy's "Terrapin" Petit Cabernet.

With the sounds of the Takoma Park "Backroads Band" in the background we relaxed, ate, and had a great time. Some warm Boordy "Spiced Wassail" sweet red wine rounded off our Sunday afternoon Baltimore area picnic.

A Baltimore County landmark - the perfect place for a fun Sunday date

Maryland's first commercial winery (established 1945), Boordy Vineyard is a Baltimore County landmark with over 40,000 visitors annually. Though Maryland is not well known for its wines, this Baltimore area winery's delicious wines argue the secret may soon get out.

Boordy wines include the "Landmark Series," crafted especially to complement meals. The "Icons of Maryland Series" is perfect with food or without. Finally, Boordy's "Just for Fun Series" of sweet party-style wines are best enjoyed over ice, chilled, or warm.

Boordy offers free winery tours, and an open-flame cauldron out front for marshmallow roasting. Sunday events at Boordy are open 1 - 5 PM, providing a leisurely Sunday afternoon fun date or group picnic, minutes from Baltimore. Tickets are available online or at the door.

This sounds like a nifty twist on the winery daytrip. Did you see mine on the VA wineries down by Front Royal? http://www.associatedcontent.com/article/656731/virginia_vineyard_daytripping.html?cat=16
