The program has rules for admittance. You must be between 16 and 18,must be a high school drop out free from involvement in the legal system, free from drugs and alcohol, unemployed or underemployed and a citizen or legal resident of the state they are applying. So the teens that enter this program are troubled teens that need a hand up.
This program can not be entered into unless the teen wants to go. This is great because the teen wants to make themselves a better person, not just because their parents or others want them to go.
I was looking for a program for my teen when I found this. I couldn't believe how wonderful it was. It is a opportunity for my child to get his GED and a Academy Diploma. They can also take certificate classes and graduate with a head start in the large pool of applicants looking for work. The children that attend and complete this program have high self esteem and feel they have accomplished something great. And they have.
This is not a fun summer camp. It is a military structured course that last 22 weeks on the military base or other such facility . After they graduate they will take part in a mentoring program for 12 months. Their mentor will guide them and keep them on the right track after they return home. It is important for the teen to stay away from the influences that got them in trouble in the first place.
Unfortunately the program is not offered in every state at this time, but with the continued success they plan to have a program in every state for every kid that wants to improve themselves. Currently the program is only offered in 29 states and one territory. But I hope this will spread all over the country. The program is free and my son is looking forward to making his life better. He plans to join the United States Army after graduation. I am very proud of his decision. You can find out more information on the program at http://www.ngycp.org
